How this list was compiled: Written from the California Vehicle Code, each cited section opened on the California Legislature's site, https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes.xhtml, checked 2026-09-19. Each question names its section and links to it. Section 12804.9 is printed there in two versions, so its link opens a list: the first version listed is the one in force until January 1, 2029, and the clauses asked here read the same in both. Exam facts on the page come from the California DMV, https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/instruction-permits/ (passing score 80%, permit from age 15 and a half) and https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/motorcycle-licenses/ (three attempts at the knowledge test), checked 2026-09-19. Those pages print no question count and no time limit for the motorcycle knowledge test, so none is used here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the California Vehicle Code text; nothing is copied from the California Motorcycle Handbook, the DMV's sample Class M tests, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

California's Vehicle Code is the only source for the 115 questions in this unofficial California motorcycle permit practice test, each with its section. The permit limits in CVC 12509.5 are the core: no riding in darkness, no freeways, no passenger but an instructor. The DMV's own test leans on riding technique, which this bank never asks. Code checked September 2026.

What California law does that other states do not

CVC 21658.1 defines lane splitting, a two-wheeled motorcycle riding between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in one lane. CVC 27803 puts a helmet on every rider and passenger at any age. CVC 27801 stops handgrips six inches above the shoulder, and CVC 22502 parks a motorcycle with a wheel or fender touching the curb.

What the DMV publishes about the test

The CA DMV motorcycle test is multiple choice and based on the California Motorcycle Handbook. The DMV's instruction permits page gives the passing score as 80% and no question count or time limit. The DMV's sample Class M tests, opened September 2026, ask mostly about riding technique: braking, lane position, group formation. This statute-only bank holds none of that.

  • Set Start from to Permits, classes M1 and M2, and training first. Questions you miss wait under Missed, and Clear my progress wipes them and your scores.
  • Keep the small machines apart: a motor-driven cycle is under 150 cc and takes class M1, a moped stays under 30 mph and takes M2, a motorized scooter rides on class C.
  • Lane splitting questions turn on the definition in CVC 21658.1: two wheels, one lane, rows stopped or moving, and no speed written into the statute.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the California motorcycle knowledge test?

The DMV does not say. Its instruction permits page, checked September 2026, gives the 80% passing score but no question count or time limit. Exam mode here marks at the DMV's 80%. The 25 questions it deals are this site's choice, not the DMV's.

Do riders over 21 need a California motorcycle permit?

The sources differ. CVC 12509.5(a) says a person shall obtain the instruction permit before operating a two-wheel motorcycle or being issued class M1 or M2. The DMV's motorcycle licenses page says people over 21 do not need one before applying for the license. Under 21, both agree: the safety course first, then six months on the permit.

Is this the DMV's M1 practice test?

It is not. The DMV publishes its own sample Class M tests, and this private page has no tie to the department and has never seen its questions. Everything here was written from the Vehicle Code, none from the California Motorcycle Handbook. Read the handbook and take those samples too.
