How this list was compiled: Written from the Illinois Vehicle Code, 625 ILCS 5, and the Cycle Rider Safety Training Act, 625 ILCS 35, as published by the Illinois General Assembly at https://www.ilga.gov/Legislation/ILCS/Articles?ActID=1815&ChapterID=49, and from 92 Ill. Adm. Code 1030.30 at https://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/092/092010300000300R.html, checked 2026-09-19. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts on the page (vision screening, a written exam with a basic part and a motorcycle part, a drive exam waived on a rider course completion card) come from the Illinois Secretary of State, https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers-license/drlicid.html, checked 2026-09-18. That page prints no question count, pass mark or time limit for the motorcycle exam, so none is given. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and rule text; nothing is copied from the Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

Illinois puts its rider rules in the Vehicle Code, and all 126 questions in this unofficial Illinois motorcycle permit practice test come from it, each with its section. The permit rules in 625 ILCS 5/6-105 are the core: daylight only, under a licensed rider of 21 or older. Riding technique is not asked. Statutes checked September 2026.

Where the Illinois Vehicle Code stands apart

625 ILCS 5/11-1404, the rider equipment section, names no helmet. It asks for glasses, goggles or a transparent shield on the operator and every passenger, and rules out contact lenses. Section 11-1403.2 bans riding a motorcycle, motor driven cycle or moped on one wheel.

What the Secretary of State publishes about the test

The Secretary of State's license page lists a vision screening, a written exam (basic and motorcycle) and a drive exam, waived on an IDOT Motorcycle Rider Course Student Completion Card. For the Illinois motorcycle permit test it names no question count or pass mark. Exam mode deals 25 questions, a number this site chose, and its score has no pass or fail.

  • Learn the permits as a pair: 12 months from age 18 under Section 6-105, 24 months at 16 or 17 under Section 6-107.1. Both are daylight only.
  • Keep the small machines apart: a motor driven cycle is under 150 cc and takes Class L, a moped runs on any license class, an autocycle takes Class D.
  • In this Illinois motorcycle practice test a wrong answer waits under Missed until you get it right. Clear my progress wipes it and your scores.

Questions and answers

What can a rider do at a red light that never changes in Illinois?

The driver may proceed once the steady red has failed to change for at least 120 seconds. 625 ILCS 5/11-306(c)(3.5) covers a motorcycle or bicycle driver who has stopped as it requires. The cause must be a malfunction or a signal that did not detect the vehicle's size or weight. The driver first yields to oncoming traffic facing a green signal.

Who can get a motorcycle instruction permit in Illinois?

At 18 or older, 625 ILCS 5/6-105 gives a 12 month permit. At 16 or 17, Section 6-107.1 gives a 24 month permit. Section 6-103 bars one for a motorcycle other than a motor driven cycle until the rider completes a training course approved by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
