How it works
Title 9 of the Indiana Code answers all 91 questions in this unofficial Indiana motorcycle permit practice test, and the section is printed under each. A helmet at any age on a permit, no passengers, no riding after dark, two abreast at most, 120 seconds at a dead red. Braking, cornering and other riding technique are not here. Statutes checked September 2026.

Where the Indiana Code surprises new riders
IC 9-19-7-1 requires a helmet only under 18, yet IC 9-24-8-3 puts every permit holder in one. IC 9-21-10-6 gives a motorcycle the full lane and caps side-by-side riding at two, by consent. A motorcycle may park rear wheel to the curb, which a car may not.
What the BMV publishes about the test, and what it leaves out
The Indiana BMV motorcycle permit test is a written knowledge test taken at a branch. IC 9-24-8-3 asks for a valid driver's license first. Neither the BMV's permit page nor its Motorcycle Operator's Manual gives a question count or pass mark. So Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's choice, not the BMV's. The score has no pass or fail. Misses wait under Missed. Clear my progress wipes them.
- Set Start from to Permits and the endorsement first: the permit's life and cap sit in IC 9-24-12-0.5, the riding limits in IC 9-24-8-3.
- Keep motor driven cycles apart from motorcycles: 50 cc, 35 mph at most, no passenger, no interstate, right-hand edge of the road.
- Check which machine each question names: a motorcycle, a motor driven cycle and an autocycle get different rules.
Questions and answers
Can a motorcycle go through a red light that stays red in Indiana?
After a wait, yes. IC 9-21-3-7(b)(3)(D) lets the operator of a motorcycle, motor driven cycle or bicycle proceed on a steady red only after a complete stop of at least 120 seconds. The operator must use due caution, treat the signal as a stop sign and judge it safe. Autocycles are excluded.
What can I not do on an Indiana motorcycle learner's permit?
Under IC 9-24-8-3 you may not carry a passenger, ride earlier than half an hour before sunrise or later than half an hour after sunset, or ride without a helmet, whatever your age. The permit lasts one year. IC 9-24-12-0.5 allows three in five years, though the BMV's page describes one renewal, then a one-year wait.
Will the Indiana motorcycle permit test at the branch look like this?
Only in part. The BMV bases its knowledge test on the Motorcycle Operator's Manual, which teaches riding technique, and this bank holds none. Every question here comes from the 2026 Indiana Code. The site is unofficial and not affiliated with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
