How this list was compiled: Written from the Ohio Revised Code, Title 45, at https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/title-45, and the Ohio Administrative Code, chapters 4501-17 and 4501-23, at https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-administrative-code/chapter-4501-17 and https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-administrative-code/chapter-4501-23, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts on the page come from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/dl-mo-motorcycle.aspx, checked 2026-09-18: a minimum age of 15 years 6 months, a knowledge test and vision screening, 60 days to buy the permit after passing, a 24-hour wait after a failed knowledge test, and a one-year permit. It publishes no question count, pass mark or time limit for the motorcycle knowledge test, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the Ohio Revised Code and Ohio Administrative Code text; nothing is copied from the Ohio Motorcycle Operator's Manual, the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

Ohio hands a new rider two documents, the temporary instruction permit and its identification card, and ORC 4511.53 sets the limits: a helmet at any age, no riding after sunset, no passenger, no limited access highway. This unofficial Ohio motorcycle permit practice test asks 80 questions on that law. Sections checked September 2026.

Helmets, the novice year and shared parking

ORC 4511.53 wants eye protection on every rider and passenger, but a helmet only under 18, on a permit, or in the "novice" year ORC 4507.13 gives first-time adult riders. ORC 4511.69 lets two motorcycles share a parallel parking space, facing any direction.

What the BMV publishes about the test

The Ohio BMV motorcycle permit test is a knowledge test with a vision screening, taken at a driver exam station. The BMV says adults holding an Ohio license may take it online. Its motorcycle page, opened September 2026, gives no question count or pass mark, so Exam mode here asks 25, this site's length, with no pass line.

  • Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Marks come at the end. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.
  • A moped stops at 50 cc and 20 mph. A motor scooter runs 50 to 100 cc and stays off streets posted above 45 mph.
  • A plain driver's license is enough for some machines: ORC 4507.03 covers an autocycle, a cab-enclosed motorcycle and a three-wheeler of 50 cc or less.

Questions and answers

Do adults have to wear a motorcycle helmet in Ohio?

Some do. ORC 4511.53(C)(1) requires a helmet for an operator under 18 and for one whose endorsement reads "novice", which ORC 4507.13 prints for one year on a first-time rider of 18 or older. That operator's passenger wears one too, as does any passenger under 18. Every permit holder wears one at any age.

How do I get a motorcycle permit in Ohio?

ORC 4507.05 has the registrar issue the permit and its identification card after the ORC 4507.11 examination on motor vehicle laws, traffic control devices and physical fitness. The BMV sets the minimum age at 15 years 6 months. Under 18, a parent or guardian signs the application under ORC 4507.07. The permit lasts one year.

Did the Ohio BMV write this motorcycle practice test?

It did not. This is not a government website, has no tie to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and has never seen the bureau's questions. Each sample question comes from the Revised Code or the Administrative Code. None comes from the Motorcycle Operator's Manual, which the BMV names as study material. Read it too.
