How this list was compiled: Written from the South Carolina Code of Laws, Title 56 (Motor Vehicles), as published by the South Carolina Legislature at https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/title56.php, checked 2026-09-19. The Legislature says at https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/statmast.php that the online code is current through the 2025 session and is not the official version. Each question names its section. The site has no address for a single section, so each link opens the chapter page; search that page for the section number shown under the question. Exam and permit facts on the page come from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, https://dmv.sc.gov/driver-services/drivers-license/beginner-permits and https://dmv.sc.gov/driver-services/drivers-license/testing/motorcycle-road-test, checked 2026-09-19. Those pages give no question count, pass mark or time limit for the motorcycle knowledge test, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the SCDMV Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, AAMVA or another practice test.

How it works

Title 56 of the South Carolina Code supplies every answer in this unofficial South Carolina motorcycle permit practice test: 109 questions, each with its section, on a helmet under 21, a licensed rider within sight after dark and no riding between lanes. Statutes checked September 2026.

Helmets under 21, the full lane and the dead red

Section 56-5-3660 asks for a helmet only under 21. Section 56-5-3640 gives a motorcycle the full lane, caps side-by-side riding at two and bars riding between rows of cars. Section 56-5-970 lets a rider treat a dead red as a stop sign after 120 seconds.

What the SCDMV says about the South Carolina motorcycle permit test

The SC motorcycle permit test is a knowledge test taken with a vision test at an SCDMV branch before 4 p.m. It costs $2, and the Class M beginner's permit $2.50. The SCDMV's pages, opened September 2026, give no question count or pass mark, so Exam mode asks 25, this site's length, with no pass line.

  • Pick Permits and the endorsement in the Start from menu: a permit must be signed to be valid and carried while riding.
  • A moped stops at 50 cc and 35 mph, an autocycle runs on a basic license, and a motorcycle with a detachable side car needs the endorsement.
  • Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Marks come at the end. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.

Questions and answers

Can I ride at night on a South Carolina motorcycle permit?

Only with company. Section 56-1-50(B)(2) lets a permit holder ride alone in daylight hours, which section 56-1-10(27) ends at 6 p.m., or 8 p.m. during daylight saving time. After that, a motorcycle-licensed rider of 21 or older with a year's driving experience must stay within a safe viewing distance.

What does a Class M beginner's permit allow?

Section 56-1-50 sets the age at 15 and the life at twelve months, with riding alone in daylight hours only. It allows renewal for further twelve-month periods and a 180-day hold for anyone never licensed before. The SCDMV's pages go further: no more than three renewals, and 180 days on it before the road test.

Is this SC motorcycle permit practice test from the SC DMV?

No. It is not a government website, is not affiliated with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and has never seen its questions. Each question comes from the South Carolina Code as the legislature publishes it, current through the 2025 session. That makes it the law half of your study. The SCDMV's manual is the other half.
