How this list was compiled: Written from the North Carolina General Statutes, Chapter 20 (Motor Vehicles), as published by the North Carolina General Assembly at https://www.ncleg.gov/Laws/GeneralStatuteSections/Chapter20, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names its section and links to that section on ncleg.gov. Exam facts on the page come from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/motorcycle/Pages/default.aspx and https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/driver-license-tests.aspx, both checked 2026-09-18. Neither page prints a question count, pass mark or time limit for the motorcycle knowledge test, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the NCDMV Motorcyclists' Handbook, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.
How it works
Chapter 20 of the General Statutes holds North Carolina's rider law, and this unofficial North Carolina motorcycle permit practice test asks 84 questions from it, with the section under every one. A helmet at every age, no passenger on a permit, three minutes at a dead red. Statutes checked September 2026.

Chapter 20 from the saddle
G.S. 20-140.4 puts an FMVSS 218 helmet on every operator and passenger, and limits riders to the number the machine was designed to carry. G.S. 20-146.1 gives a motorcycle the full lane and caps side-by-side riding at two. G.S. 20-158(e) is a court defense, not a permission: a full stop, an inductive-loop signal, nobody with the right-of-way, three minutes.
What the NCDMV publishes about the test
The NC DMV motorcycle permit test is three tests under G.S. 20-7(a2): vision, road signs and motorcycle knowledge. The NCDMV's motorcycle page says knowledge tests are by appointment and that riders aged 16 to 18 need parental consent. It prints no question count, pass mark or time limit, so Exam mode here asks 25, this site's length, with no pass line. This NC DMV motorcycle practice test handles the statute half only.
Start with the NC motorcycle permit restrictions in G.S. 20-7(a2): no passenger, 12 months, one renewal.
A rider under 18 with the endorsement still may not carry a passenger (G.S. 20-7(a1)).

Questions and answers
Do moped riders need a license or a helmet in North Carolina?
No license, but a helmet. G.S. 20-7(a1) asks for no drivers license or motorcycle endorsement to drive a moped, and G.S. 20-10.1 sets the minimum age at 16. G.S. 20-140.4 still puts a helmet on the operator and any passenger.
How do I get an NC DMV motorcycle permit, and what are its limits?
Under G.S. 20-7(a2) you need a full provisional license at 16 or 17, or a Division license from 18. You pass the three tests, and under 18 you also finish the Basic Rider Course. The permit lasts 12 months, renews once for six months and never allows a passenger.
Did the NCDMV write this NC motorcycle permit practice test?
It did not. The site is not a government website, is not affiliated with the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles and has never seen its questions. Every question was written from the General Statutes, not the Motorcyclists' Handbook. Treat it as an NC motorcycle permit test study guide for the law, and read the handbook for riding technique.
