How this list was compiled: Written from the Kentucky Revised Statutes (chapters 176, 186, 189, 189A and 304) as published by the Legislative Research Commission at https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/, and from two administrative regulations on the same site, 601 KAR 14:010 (headgear and eye protection) at https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/601/014/010/ and 601 KAR 14:050 (motorcycle safety education) at https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/601/014/050/, all checked 2026-09-19. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts: the Kentucky State Police driver testing page, https://www.kentuckystatepolice.ky.gov/driver-testing, and the Transportation Cabinet's Motorcycle Credentials page, https://drive.ky.gov/Drivers/Pages/Motorcycle%20Credentials.aspx, both checked 2026-09-19, give no question count, pass mark or time limit for the motorcycle knowledge test, so none is given here. The Cabinet's page is the source for the permit term of one year, renewable once, and for the rider course waiver of the written and skills tests. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and regulation text; nothing is copied from the Kentucky Motorcycle Manual, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.
How it works
Kentucky writes its motorcycle rules into KRS chapters 176, 186 and 189, and this unofficial Kentucky motorcycle permit practice test turns them into 113 questions, each linked to its section. Expect the one-year permit, first-year headgear and the 120-second red light defense. No riding technique: that is in the state's Motorcycle Manual. Sections checked September 2026.

How Kentucky's statutes treat riders
KRS 186.450 opens the motorcycle permit at 18, or earlier to an intermediate license holder, for one year with one renewal. KRS 189.285 lets no permit holder carry a passenger. KRS 189.338(6) sets four conditions, among them a full stop and a 120-second wait, for an affirmative defense to crossing a steady red. No statute addresses lane sharing, so this KY motorcycle permit practice test leaves it out.
The test as Kentucky's agencies describe it
The Kentucky State Police give the knowledge test. Their driver testing page, opened September 2026, prints no question count, pass mark, time limit or retest wait. The Transportation Cabinet lists the permit at $15, or $18 as a REAL ID. Use this as a KY motorcycle permit test study guide for the law alone. Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's choice, not the state's, and the score has no pass or fail. Misses wait under Missed until you get them right. Clear my progress wipes them.
Kentucky defines motorcycle twice: KRS 189.285(6)(a) leaves out enclosed cabs, KRS 186.010(15) takes them in.
KRS 186.450 sets the holding period by age at application: 180 days from 18 to 20, 30 days from 21.
A motor scooter needs a motorcycle license or permit (KRS 189.2851). An autocycle needs only an operator's license (KRS 189.288).
Questions and answers
Can a rider course replace the Kentucky motorcycle permit test?
Yes. Under KRS 176.5062(5), completing an approved rider training course waives the permit's written test and the license's skills test. KRS 186.450(9) says the instruction permit is then not required before the motorcycle license. A novice course must include at least eight hours of hands-on instruction, and an applicant under 18 pays nothing.
Do you have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle in Kentucky?
Some riders do. KRS 189.285(3) requires protective headgear for operators and passengers under 21, for anyone riding on an instruction permit, and for operators licensed for less than one year. Eye protection under subsection (1)(b) binds every operator while the motorcycle moves.
Is this the real Kentucky State Police knowledge test?
It is not. Nobody at the Kentucky State Police or the Transportation Cabinet wrote, reviewed or supplied these questions. The bank draws only on the Kentucky Revised Statutes and 601 KAR chapter 14, so riding technique and the highway signs tested under KRS 186.480(2) are missing.
