How this list was compiled: Written from the Maine Revised Statutes, Title 29-A (Motor Vehicles and Traffic), sections 101, 452, 1252, 1254, 1304, 1352, 1758, 1902, 1904, 1913, 2062, 2063, 2083 and 2089-B, each read on the Maine Legislature's own site, https://legislature.maine.gov/statutes/29-A/title29-Ach0sec0.html, on 2026-10-04 (the site's pages say their text was extracted on 10/20/2025). Each question names its section and links to that section's page. That a written test is part of the permit is 29-A M.R.S. §1304(2)(B) (a knowledge test related specifically to the safe operation of a motorcycle or moped) with §1352(1) and (6)(A) (the rider education course and examination; the Secretary of State may waive the written examination on a completion certificate). The Bureau of Motor Vehicles' own motorcycle license page returned 404 on 2026-10-04 and its driver's license exam page gives a question count and pass mark only for the Class C test, so no test length or pass mark is used here. On 2026-10-05 the bureau's Car and Motorcycle License page, https://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/driver-licenses-and-ids/car-license, and the Maine Motorcycle Operator Manual it links, https://www.maine.gov/sos/sites/maine.gov.sos/files/inline-files/motorcyclemanual.pdf, were opened to confirm two things only: the manual's title and its sentence that knowledge test questions are based on information, practices and ideas from the manual. Neither prints a question count or pass mark for the motorcycle test, and no question, choice or explanation here was drawn from the manual. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the state's motorcycle manual, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles' test, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial Maine motorcycle permit test practice has 62 questions from Title 29-A of the Maine Revised Statutes, with the section under each. It covers the law only; riding technique is in the Maine Motorcycle Operator Manual.

The permit, headgear and the lane

29-A M.R.S. §1304 opens the motorcycle permit at 16, runs it 2 years and bars a passenger. §2083 asks for headgear under 18, on a permit and for one year after the driving test. §2062 gives a motorcycle the full lane, allows 2 abreast and bans riding between rows of vehicles.

What Maine law says about the test

§1304(2)(B) asks for a vision test and a knowledge test on the safe operation of a motorcycle or moped. §1352 requires a rider education course first, and lets the Secretary of State waive the written examination on a completion certificate. No agency page giving a question count or pass mark for the motorcycle test was read in October 2026, so none is shown.

  • §1352 uses 60 days twice: a course certificate is a temporary permit for 60 days, and a road-test waiver bars passengers for 60 days.

Questions and answers

Is there a motorcycle helmet law in Maine?

For some riders. 29-A M.R.S. §2083 requires protective headgear for an operator or passenger under 18, an operator on a learner's permit or within one year of the driving test, and the passenger of an operator who must wear it.

What is on the Maine motorcycle license test?

§1304(2)(B) describes a knowledge test on the safe operation of a motorcycle or moped. The Maine Motorcycle Operator Manual says the questions are based on that manual. This page asks only what Title 29-A says: the permit, headgear, passengers, equipment and lane use.

Can you carry a passenger on a Maine motorcycle permit?

No. §1304(2)(G) says the learner's permit does not allow the holder to carry a passenger. An endorsement issued after a road examination waiver also bars passengers for 60 days (§1352(6)(B)).

Is this the state's own Maine motorcycle test?

No. It is an independent practice page, not a government website and not affiliated with the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles or the Maine Secretary of State, whose questions it has never seen. Each question was written from Title 29-A on the Legislature's website.
