What the Maine barber exam is

Chapter 21 of the Program's rules makes the license examination two national tests, a written and a practical. The examiner's bulletin (opened October 16, 2026) names the written test Barber 1 (No Chemical).

What this page practices

The written outline has four content areas and no Maine law. This bank asks the state's own text: the barber hair styling license in Title 32, trainees and supervisors, level 1 and level 2 establishments, and the sanitation chapter of the rules. Hair, skin and shaving theory is not asked.

  • A service cape goes on over a disposable neck strip or a cloth towel (Chapter 26, section 26.146).
  • Both exams must be passed within one year of the first sitting, or both are retaken (Chapter 21, section 1).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Maine barber exam?

The examiner's bulletin lists Barber 1 (No Chemical) at 60 questions in 90 minutes, with 10 unscored pilot questions among them. The practical exam is 80 minutes.

What is the passing score on the Maine barber exam?

The bulletin prints a passing score of 75 for the written and for the practical exam. Rounds on this page end with a score and no verdict, because they ask state law, not theory.

Are these the real Maine barber exam questions?

No. Each was written for this page from Title 32, chapter 126, the Program's rules and the candidate bulletins, with the section under each answer. Nothing comes from the examination or a textbook.

How many hours do you need for a barber license in Maine?

800 hours in a licensed school in not less than 5 months, or 1,600 hours as a trainee over at least 10 months, and an approved examination (32 M.R.S. 14227-A). The statute calls the license barber hair styling.
