How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, 11th Edition (December 2023), Federal Highway Administration, https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the MUTCD section it was written from. Licence: Own work. Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.
How it works
Maine's written exam is 30 questions, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles wants 24 right. This unofficial Maine permit practice test drills the law underneath: 177 questions written from Title 29-A of the Maine Revised Statutes, each linked to its section, plus 48 on federal road signs. Statutes fetched 18 September 2026.

The BMV sits inside the Secretary of State's office
There is no DMV in Maine. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles, part of the Secretary of State's office, runs the knowledge exam, a free vision screening and, later, the road test. Its exam page names five topics: rules of the road, signs, pedestrian and bicycle safety, Maine's OUI laws and distracted driving. Good Maine permit test practice covers all five. For the last two, set Topic to Alcohol and crashes or to Seat belts, child seats and phones.
Section 2074 was amended in 2025
Public Law 2025, chapter 199 amended the speed section, so this bank follows the text now in force: 25 mph in a business or residential district, 45 mph on any other unposted public way, and 15 mph in a school zone during recess. If an older Maine practice permit test gives a different number, open the linked statute and trust that.
Section 2066: stay 500 feet behind fire apparatus answering an alarm, 150 behind other emergency vehicles using lights.
The permit's own rules are testable law under section 1304: a supervising driver aged 20 or more, no handheld phone even at a red light, and 70 logged hours if you are under 21.
Two minimum fines worth memorizing: $275 for failing to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle (section 2054) and $250 for passing a stopped school bus (section 2308).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Maine permit test, and how many can you miss?
Thirty, and you can miss 6: at least 24 must be correct, per the Bureau of Motor Vehicles' driver's license exam page, checked 18 September 2026. The digital test comes in nine languages.
Is the BMV driving test the same as the permit test?
No, they are two exams. The permit test is the written knowledge exam, and the driving test is the road test taken later with a BMV examiner. Under section 1304, a driver under 21 must first hold the permit for six months and log 70 hours, 10 of them at night.
Are these the questions the BMV asks?
No, and this site has never seen the Bureau's question pool. Each question was written from a section of Title 29-A, shows its citation and links to the Maine Legislature's copy.
