How it works

New Hampshire issues no learner's permit, so the knowledge test arrives with the license application. This unofficial New Hampshire permit practice test copies that exam's published shape, 40 questions in 40 minutes with 32 to pass, drawing on 268 questions written from RSA Title XXI plus 48 on road signs. Statutes read 18 September 2026.

The Division of Motor Vehicles runs the exam

The New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles, part of the Department of Safety, gives the knowledge test by appointment. Its Driver's Manual, checked 18 September 2026, describes 40 multiple choice questions, 40 minutes on a touch screen, and an exam that ends after more than 8 wrong answers. Exam mode runs all 40. The clock starts when you press Start the exam, and time running out ends it. The division's testing page sets the passing grade at 80 percent.

Learning without a permit under RSA 263:25

From age 15 and a half, an unlicensed person may drive while being taught, with a certified instructor, parent, guardian or licensed adult of 25 or older beside them. Carry proof of age. The adult answers for the learner's violations. At 16, with driver education and 40 more supervised hours, 10 at night, the youth operator license follows.

  • Youth operator rules (RSA 263:14): no driving from 1:00 to 4:00 a.m., and for the first six months only one non-family passenger under 25 unless a licensed adult of 25 or older rides along.
  • A driver under 18 may not use a phone, hands-free included, except to report an emergency (RSA 265:79-c, IV).
  • 30 mph in a business district, 70 mph only on I-93 north of mile marker 45, and 25 feet back from a stopped school bus.

Questions and answers

Does New Hampshire have a learner's permit?

No. The Driver's Manual says New Hampshire issues no permits to learn to drive, and the division's page for minors adds that other states' permits are not honored. RSA 263:25 covers practice from 15 and a half, and the knowledge test comes with the license application.

How soon can I retake the New Hampshire knowledge test?

Operator and Motorcycle applicants wait ten calendar days before a retest, the division's testing page says. Its fee page lists $50.00 for an operator license, $60.00 with REAL ID and $10.00 per year for a youth operator, with no separate knowledge test charge. Checked 18 September 2026.

Why cite RSA sections instead of the Driver's Manual?

The manual is the state's own work, so this page does not copy it. Each question was written from the Revised Statutes Annotated (RSA) on the General Court's website, so every explanation links to its section. None comes from the division's exam, so read the manual.
