Each question names its section; the Legislature publishes no stable link to a single section, so every question links to the Legislature's statutes database at https://lis.njleg.state.nj.us/nxt/gateway.dll?f=templates&fn=default.htm&vid=Publish:10.1048/Enu, where the section number can be searched (checked 2026-09-19). Exam facts on the page (50 questions, 80 percent or 40 of 50 to pass, test languages, vision standard, $10 permit fee) come from the 2026 New Jersey Driver Manual, https://www.nj.gov/mvc/pdf/license/drivermanual.pdf, and the retest wait, permit steps and test languages from the Motor Vehicle Commission pages https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/knowledgetest.htm and https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/firstlic.htm, all checked 2026-09-19. How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, 11th Edition (December 2023), Federal Highway Administration, https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the MUTCD section it was written from. Licence: Own work. Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.
How it works
This unofficial New Jersey permit practice test carries 525 questions, each naming its section of Title 39 of the New Jersey Statutes, and 48 more on federal road signs. The link under a question opens the Legislature's statute database. Search there for the section number. The Motor Vehicle Commission's test asks 50 questions and passes at 40. Exam mode, below the question, matches and scores each topic.

What the NJ MVC permit test asks
New Jersey has no DMV. The Motor Vehicle Commission gives the knowledge test, and its Sample Knowledge Test page, checked 19 September 2026, puts the exam at 50 questions with 80 percent, or 40, to pass. Written tests come in 13 languages, oral tests in English and Spanish. Fail, and the retest wait is 7 days.
Where Title 39 spends its words
Title 39 is longest on licensing and on alcohol, so the bank is too: 108 questions on permits, points and insurance, 92 on alcohol and crashes. N.J.S.A. 39:4-98 sets 25 mph in a school zone while children are about and in a business or residential district, 35 in a suburban one and 50 on most other roads.
N.J.S.A. 39:4-128.1: stop at least 25 feet from a school bus loading or unloading children. With a median between you and the bus, slow to 10 mph.
N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3: a first or second handheld phone offense carries no penalty points. A third brings three points, and the court may take the right to drive for 90 days.
Permit holders under 21: no driving from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and one passenger beyond dependents unless a parent or guardian rides along (N.J.S.A. 39:3-13).
Questions and answers
Can I print a New Jersey practice test or save one as a PDF?
Yes, 50 at a time. Print question sheet prints the next 50, and Print answer key lists each answer and its source. Most browsers can save either as a PDF from the print window. It is not the MVC's test. The commission posts its own Sample Knowledge Test on nj.gov.
How old must I be for the New Jersey knowledge test?
Over 16 with a special learner's permit, which goes with a behind-the-wheel course of at least six hours (N.J.S.A. 39:3-13.1, 39:3-13.2a). Over 17, an examination permit needs no course (39:3-13). The MVC asks for 6 Points of ID and an appointment.
What happens after I pass the knowledge test?
Supervised practice. Under 21, the statute sets six months with a New Jersey licensed driver who is at least 21 and has held a license three years, plus 50 hours of practice, 10 of them in darkness (N.J.S.A. 39:3-13). At 21 or older the supervised period is three months.
