How this list was compiled: Written from the New Jersey Statutes, Title 23 (Fish and Game, Wild Birds and Animals): sections 23:1-1, 23:1-3, 23:3-1, 23:3-2, 23:3-3, 23:3-3.1, 23:3-4.2, 23:3-4.3, 23:3-4.5, 23:3-4.6, 23:3-4.11, 23:3-7.1, 23:4-12, 23:4-13, 23:4-13.1, 23:4-16, 23:4-23, 23:4-24, 23:4-24.1, 23:4-24.1a, 23:4-24.2, 23:4-24.3, 23:4-24.4, 23:4-24.5, 23:4-36, 23:4-43, 23:4-44, 23:4-45, 23:4-46, 23:4-47, 23:7-1, 23:7-3 and 23:7A-2. The text was read from the New Jersey Legislature's own statutes download, https://pub.njleg.gov/statutes/STATUTES-TEXT.zip (file dated 2026-10-10, listed at https://www.njleg.gov/legislative-downloads?downloadType=Statutes), fetched 2026-10-12. Each question names its section; the Legislature publishes no stable link to a single section, so every statute question links to the Legislature's statutes database at https://lis.njleg.state.nj.us/nxt/gateway.dll?f=templates&fn=default.htm&vid=Publish:10.1048/Enu, where the section number can be searched. The course facts in the topic "The course and the range session" are New Jersey Fish and Wildlife's own, read the same day on its Hunter Education page, https://dep.nj.gov/njfw/education/hunter-education/, which is the published outline this page follows. That page gives a 100 question exam for the online course and no pass mark, so no pass mark is given here. The State Fish and Game Code (N.J.A.C. 7:25-5) and the Hunting and Trapping Digest were not read and nothing is asked from them; where a statute yields to the Code (shotgun capacity, deer check-in procedure, seasons and hours) no question is asked. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the statutes and the facts on the division's public page; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.
How it works
Unofficial practice for the New Jersey hunter education exam: our own questions from Title 23 of the New Jersey Statutes and the division's published course facts, each with its source. Firearm and bow handling and the live fire range session belong to the course.

An NJ hunter education practice test on Title 23
A firearm hunter after deer, rabbit, squirrel or most game birds wears a fluorescent orange cap or 200 square inches of orange. A loaded firearm stays 450 feet from an occupied building, a nocked arrow 150 feet. Hunting with firearms on Sunday is prohibited, with listed exceptions.
What the New Jersey hunting license test is
Fish and Wildlife's online course ends in an exam. Passing it gives the Home Study Voucher for a live fire range session in firearm, bow or both.
A youth license holder under 14 hunts only beside a regular license holder older than 21.
The license is worn in a holder on the outer clothing, and shown to anyone who asks to see it.
Questions and answers
