How this list was compiled: Written only from 50 CFR 21.82, "Falconry standards and falconry permitting", paragraphs (a) to (h), read in the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-50/section-21.82, on 2026-10-02 and again on 2026-10-03, when every keyed answer and every wrong choice was compared with the text (text current as of 2026-10-01; the section was last amended at 89 FR 107042, December 31, 2024). Each question names its paragraph. The one examination fact is the rule's own: paragraph (c)(3) sets 80 percent as the share of questions an applicant must answer correctly before an Apprentice permit is issued. The rule gives no number of questions, because each State, tribe or territory administers its own examination, so none is used. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the federal rule, a work of the United States government; nothing is copied from a State falconry manual or examination, a falconry club's study guide or a flashcard set.
How it works
This unofficial apprentice falconry study guide asks the federal falconry standards only, 50 CFR 21.82, with the paragraph under each answer. Each State, tribe or territory writes its own examination and rules, which are not here. Read October 2026.

What a falconry study guide from the federal rule covers
Paragraph (c)(2) sets the Apprentice class: at least 12 years old, a letter from a Master or General Falconer, one raptor, and facilities that pass inspection first. Paragraphs (c)(6) to (f) cover bands, facilities, taking raptors from the wild, reports and release.
One number in Exam mode
Exam mode draws 25 questions and marks them against 80 percent, the rule's own figure in paragraph (c)(3). The rule gives no number of questions, because each State, tribe or territory administers its own examination; 25 is this site's choice.
Three limits: an Apprentice may possess one raptor, a General Falconer 3, a Master Falconer 5 wild raptors.
Care by others: another permittee may keep your raptors up to 120 consecutive days, a person without a permit 45.
Questions and answers
Is there a falconry apprentice study guide PDF here?
No file is stored here. After a round, Print on the score card puts the questions you played on paper, and a tick on With answer key adds the answers. A State agency's own guide comes from that agency.
How old do you have to be to be an apprentice falconer?
At least 12 under the federal standards. If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian signs the application and is legally responsible for your activities. A State, tribe or territory may set stricter rules.
What does a falconry exam study guide need to cover?
Paragraph (c)(3) says the examination covers care and handling of falconry raptors, the federal, State and tribal laws and regulations relevant to falconry, and other appropriate subject matter. This page holds the federal rule only.
What score do you need to pass the falconry exam?
At least 80 percent. Paragraph (c)(3) requires an applicant to answer that share of the questions correctly before an Apprentice permit is issued. The State, tribe or territory administers the examination.
Does this page cover raptor care and my State's rules?
Only where the federal rule states them: paragraph (d) on facilities, equipment and care by others. Raptor health, feeding, training and each State's own rules are in the State's and falconry clubs' study material, which this page does not cover.
