  • Which refrigerant does the rule give as an example for a low-pressure appliance? 40 CFR 82.152, low-pressure appliance
  • Which sign does EPA give for leakage into a low-pressure system? EPA, Section 608 Test Topics, Type 3 (Low-Pressure): Leak Detection
  • While refrigerant is evacuated from a chiller, what should be done with the water in the tubes? EPA, Section 608 Test Topics, Type 3 (Low-Pressure): Recovery Techniques
  • You reach 25 mm of mercury absolute on a low-pressure chiller, and a few minutes later the pressure has climbed. What does that indicate? EPA, Section 608 Test Topics, Type 3 (Low-Pressure): Recovery Requirements

How this list was compiled: Written from 40 CFR part 82, subpart F (sections 82.150 to 82.169 and appendix D), 40 CFR part 84, subpart C, and 40 CFR 19.4, read at https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/part-82/subpart-F in the eCFR text dated 2026-09-17, and from EPA's Section 608 pages: Test Topics (https://www.epa.gov/section608/test-topics, last updated by EPA December 5, 2025), Technician Certification Requirements (https://www.epa.gov/section608/section-608-technician-certification-requirements, last updated July 15, 2026), the venting, sales restriction, service practice, safe disposal and leak repair pages, the Class I and Class II phaseout pages, Basic Ozone Layer Science, and Background on HFCs and the AIM Act. All checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the section or page it was written from. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the rule text and EPA's public pages. Nothing is copied from the EPA test bank that certifying programs assemble their tests from, or from another practice test.

How it works

These unofficial EPA 608 practice tests hold 192 questions in four topic filters: Core, Type I, Type II and Type III. Every question was written from 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F, 40 CFR Part 84 or a named EPA page, checked on September 18, 2026, and each explanation names that source. Exam mode, under the question, draws 25 questions and uses the 70 percent pass mark from the rule.

How the Section 608 test is built

Appendix D to Subpart F sets the format. Each test has 25 Core questions plus 25 for each type you sit: Type I for small appliances, Type II for medium, high and very high-pressure equipment, Type III for low-pressure chillers. The closed-book passing score is 70 percent, and a Type I test taken by mail needs 84 percent. A mail-in Type I result cannot count toward Universal. Appendix D gives no time limit, so exam mode here runs without a clock.

From a Core round to a Universal run

Set the Start from menu under the question to Core for an EPA 608 core practice test of 76 questions on ozone science, the venting ban, recovery, sales rules, cylinders and safety. Type I has 30 questions. The Type II filter gives an EPA 608 practice test Type 2 candidates can use alone: 56 questions on evacuation levels, leak detection and leak repair. Type III is an EPA 608 Type 3 practice test of 30 questions on low-pressure chillers. Choose All topics for an EPA 608 universal practice test. Exam mode, under the question, draws 25 at random and marks nothing until you finish. Each round is scored against 70 percent, with a table by topic.

A study guide in question form

Read the explanations and the bank doubles as a free EPA 608 study guide. Each one names its section. The best EPA 608 study guide is still the source, so every citation points to the eCFR or an EPA page. Answers that change carry a date, including the HFC leak repair rules that began on January 1, 2026. Older materials may still quote the 35 and 15 percent leak rates, which stopped applying on January 1, 2019.

  • Work the Missed pile, under More options, like EPA 608 flashcards: read the question, say the number out loud, then check. Clear my progress, under More options, erases what this browser keeps.
  • Learn Table 1 of 40 CFR 82.156 as a grid: pressure class, charge under or over 200 pounds, recovery equipment made before or after November 15, 1993.
  • Keep the leak rate thresholds together: 20 percent for commercial refrigeration, 30 for industrial process refrigeration, 10 for comfort cooling.
  • Start with Core. It is part of every test, and an open-book Core result cannot be used for Universal, so answer with your notes closed.
  • Going for all four groups? Use the page as an EPA 608 universal study guide: one topic filter per evening, then a mixed exam round.

Questions and answers

Is the EPA 608 test hard?

It rewards recall more than reasoning. Much of it is numbers: vacuum levels in inches of mercury, leak rate percentages, repair deadlines and dates such as November 15, 1993. We have no pass-rate figure to quote.

How many questions are on the EPA 608 Universal exam?

Appendix D to 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F says 100: 25 Core questions plus 25 each for Type I, Type II and Type III. Universal can be taken all at once or earned by combining passing scores on separate type tests.

Where can I get an EPA 608 test answers PDF?

Be wary of any such file, or of a list sold as EPA 608 Type 2 test answers. Certifying programs draw each test from a larger EPA bank, so many versions exist. Print, on the score card here, makes a question sheet, and a tick adds an answer key.

Does this EPA certification practice test cover Section 609?

No. It covers Section 608 only, which is stationary refrigeration and air conditioning. Universal is a 608 credential, so an EPA universal practice test stops there too. Section 609 is a separate certification for motor vehicle air conditioners under 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart B.

Does Section 608 certification expire?

EPA's certification requirements page, last updated July 15, 2026, says Section 608 credentials do not expire. Under 40 CFR 82.161, keep a copy of your certificate at your place of business until three years after you stop working as a technician.

Can this EPA 608 certification practice test replace my program's manual?

Use it alongside the manual. This is an unofficial 608 practice test written from public sources, not by EPA or a certifying program, and it is not safety training. Every answer names its source.
