How this list was compiled: 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart B (Servicing of Motor Vehicle Air Conditioners), sections 82.30 to 82.42, in the text dated October 1, 2026, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's motor vehicle air conditioning pages at epa.gov/mvac Licence: Questions, choices and explanations are our own wording. The rule text and the EPA pages are U.S. government works in the public domain.
How it works
This unofficial EPA 609 practice test holds 89 questions on servicing vehicle air conditioners, written from 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart B and EPA's motor vehicle air conditioning pages, read October 4, 2026. Each answer names its source.

What the questions cover
Six topics follow the rule: who and what it covers, technician training and certification, approved equipment, recovering, recycling and reclaiming refrigerant, sales limits and shop records, and the refrigerants themselves (CFC-12, HFC-134a, HFO-1234yf and CO2) with their fittings. Use it as an EPA 609 certification study guide to the rule text; no program's own manual or test is used.
Practice only, with no pass mark
Section 82.40 lists what a program's test must cover, and this bank follows that list. It names no question count and no pass mark, so Exam mode draws 25 questions, which is this site's choice, and shows a score with no pass or fail.
Keep the two Clean Air Act sections apart: Section 609 covers vehicle air conditioner service, and the venting ban sits in Section 608.
Learn the 20 pound line: it is the container size in the rule's sales limit for class I and class II refrigerant.
Questions and answers
Is this the EPA 609 test?
No. It is unofficial practice written from the federal rule and EPA's pages. The real test is given by an EPA-approved training and certification program, and EPA's pages at epa.gov/mvac link to its list of those programs.
Does an EPA 609 certification practice test certify me?
No. This page gives no card or certificate. Under 40 CFR 82.40, proof of certification comes from an approved program after its own training and test, with a unique number for each certified technician.
Who needs Section 609 certification?
EPA's page says any person who repairs or services a motor vehicle air conditioning system for consideration, meaning payment or bartering, must be trained and certified by an EPA-approved program, whatever refrigerant the system uses.
What is the difference between Section 608 and Section 609?
Subpart B of 40 CFR Part 82 puts Section 609 into effect for servicing motor vehicle air conditioners. Section 608 covers stationary refrigeration and air conditioning, and it also holds the ban on venting refrigerant.
Does Section 609 certification expire?
The rule sets no expiry date. Section 82.40(d) says only that the EPA Administrator reserves the right to specify the need for technician recertification at some future date.
