How it works
This unofficial airframe and powerplant practice test has a bank for each aviation mechanic knowledge test: General, Airframe and Powerplant. The FAA does not publish its bank, so none are its questions.

An aviation A&P practice test in three banks
The Question set menu switches banks. The A&P General written test questions ask the rules of 14 CFR parts 43 and 65 (certificates, privileges, inspection authorization, maintenance records) and the General handbook: weight and balance, electricity, materials, corrosion, drawings and ground operation. Airframe covers structures, flight controls, sheet metal, welding and composites, hydraulics and landing gear, and cabin, fuel and electrical systems. Powerplant covers reciprocating engines, ignition and starting, fuel metering, lubrication, propellers and turbine engines.
What this A&P practice exam leaves out
Questions that need a figure, a chart or a calculation are not here yet. No FAA question is here either: its bank is not published. This page gives no question count, time limit or passing score for the real tests.

Questions and answers
Are these the real A&P test questions?
No. The FAA does not publish its knowledge test question bank. Every question here was written for this site from 14 CFR parts 43 and 65 and the FAA's Aviation Maintenance Technician handbooks; none comes from an FAA sample test or a prep company.
Who is eligible for a mechanic certificate?
Under 14 CFR 65.71(a), a person must be at least 18 years of age, be able to read, write, speak and understand English (with one exception for work outside the United States), and have passed all of the prescribed tests within 24 months.
How much experience does a mechanic certificate take?
Section 65.77 asks for a document from a certificated aviation maintenance technician school, or evidence of at least 18 months of practical experience for one rating, or at least 30 months concurrently performing the duties of both the airframe and powerplant ratings.
Do the written tests come before the oral and practical tests?
Yes. Section 65.75(b) says the applicant must pass each section of the written test before applying for the oral and practical tests of section 65.79.
Which editions of the sources were used?
The eCFR text of 14 CFR dated September 29, 2026, and the General, Airframe and Powerplant handbooks, FAA-H-8083-30B, 31B and 32B, read on October 4, 2026. Rules change, and the current text at ecfr.gov is the final word.
