How this list was compiled: Written from the text of 14 CFR parts 1, 61, 91, 117 and 121 as published in the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (a US government work), read at https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14 in the eCFR text dated 2026-09-29. Every question names the section its answer comes from and links to it. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the rule text, which is a US government work. Nothing is copied from an FAA knowledge test, an FAA sample question or any prep company's bank.

How it works

This unofficial ATP practice test asks 211 questions on 14 CFR parts 1, 61, 91, 117 and 121, with no weather or performance. The FAA does not publish its bank, so none are its questions.

ATP written exam regulations in eight topics

Each explanation names the section of 14 CFR behind the answer and links to it. The topics: the certificate itself (part 61), definitions and speed symbols (part 1), flight and duty limits (part 117), four on part 121 from crew qualification to cabin equipment, and the high-altitude and large airplane rules of part 91.

What the bank leaves out

14 CFR 61.155(c) lists fourteen knowledge areas, and this bank asks only the regulations. Meteorology, weather charts, navigation, loading, aerodynamics, performance and human factors need handbook text and chart figures and are not here yet. No part 135 section is asked.

  • Part 117 counts in hours: 168 consecutive hours is seven days and 672 is twenty-eight.
  • Part 1 defines each speed symbol in one line; the definitions topic asks them one by one.
  • Misses sit under Missed in More options until answered right.

Questions and answers

Are these the questions on the real ATP knowledge test?

No. The FAA does not publish its knowledge test question bank. Every question here was written for this site from the text of 14 CFR; none comes from an FAA sample test or a prep company's bank.

Is this enough ATP written test prep on its own?

No. It covers the regulations: parts 1, 61, 91, 117 and 121. Section 61.155(c) also lists meteorology, weather charts, navigation, loading, aerodynamics, performance and human factors, and those questions are not in this bank yet.

What comes before the ATP knowledge test for a multiengine airplane rating?

14 CFR 61.153(e) asks for a graduation certificate from the ATP certification training program before applying. Section 61.156 sets that program at 30 hours or more of classroom instruction and 10 hours or more in a flight simulation training device.

How many flight hours does an airplane ATP certificate take?

Section 61.159 asks for 1,500 hours of total time, including 500 cross-country, 100 night and 75 instrument. Section 61.160 allows 750, 1,000 or 1,250 hours for certain military pilots and graduates of aviation degree programs.

Which edition of the rules was used?

The eCFR text of 14 CFR dated September 29, 2026, read on October 4, 2026. Rules change, and the current text at ecfr.gov is the final word.
