How this list was compiled: Written from the Vermont Statutes Annotated, Title 10, Part 4 (Fish and Wildlife): chapter 101 (section 4001), chapter 105 (sections 4252, 4253, 4254, 4256, 4263, 4266, 4267, 4280), chapter 109 (section 4501), chapter 113 (sections 4701 to 4706, 4708, 4710, 4713, 4715, 4716, 4742a, 4747, 4751, 4783, 4902, 4905, 4908, 4921, 4922) and chapter 119 (section 5201), and from the Fish and Wildlife Board rules in the Title 10 Appendix, sections 2, 2a and 5, each read on the Vermont General Assembly's site, https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/title/10, on 2026-10-09. Each question names its section and links to it. The course facts in the topic "The course and the written exam" (no minimum age, the parental consent form under 16, the online course for residents 18 or older, what a student must do to pass) are the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department's own, read the same day on its pages https://vtfishandwildlife.com/hunt/hunter-education, https://vtfishandwildlife.com/hunt/hunter-education/hunter-ed-faqs and https://vtfishandwildlife.com/hunt/hunter-education/find-a-hunter-ed-course, which are the published outline this page follows. The Department publishes no number of questions and no pass mark for its written exam, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Vermont statutes and Board rules and the facts on the Department's public pages; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a workbook, an online course or an examination.

How it works

Unofficial practice test on Vermont hunter safety law: every question comes from Title 10 of the Vermont Statutes or a Fish and Wildlife Board rule and names its section. Firearm handling and field skills belong to the course.

Rules that are Vermont's own

A mentored hunter stays within 15 feet of the licensed hunter. Big game is tagged immediately and reported within 48 hours. Nobody shoots within 25 feet of the traveled part of a public highway, and a posted safety zone reaches 500 feet from an occupied dwelling.

What the written exam is

The Fish and Wildlife Department says a student must pass a written exam, show maturity handling a firearm or bow and act safely in class. It publishes no question count and no pass mark, so none is set here; a round of 25 is our own length.

  • Two posting distances: safety zone posters stand no more than 200 feet apart, notices on land posted against hunting no more than 400 feet apart.
  • Youth deer and turkey weekends are for hunters 15 or under who have passed the course, each with an unarmed licensed adult over 18.

Questions and answers

Is there a Vermont hunter safety course practice test for the written exam?

This page is one for the law part: our own questions from the statutes, never the Department's exam. The course manual and workbook, which the Department mails on request, cover firearm safety and the rest.

How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in Vermont?

The Department sets no minimum age for an in-person course. Students under 16 need a signed parental consent form, and the material is written at a 6th grade reading level. The fully online course is for Vermont residents 18 or older.

Do you need hunter safety to hunt in Vermont?

Section 4254 asks a first-time applicant for a hunter safety certificate or an earlier hunting license from any state or Canadian province. A mentored hunting license under section 4256 lets a beginner hunt beside a licensed hunter 21 or older.

How much does the Vermont hunter education course cost?

Nothing. Section 4254(c) says no fee shall be charged for a course of instruction the Commissioner provides, and the Department describes the course as free, taught by volunteer instructors.

Is this the official Vermont hunter education test?

No. This site is unofficial and has no connection to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, which schedules the courses and certifies students through its instructors.
