How this list was compiled: Written from Title 12 of the Maine Revised Statutes as the Office of the Revisor of Statutes publishes it under https://legislature.maine.gov/statutes/12/ (sections 10108, 10652, 11105, 11108, 11108-B, 11108-C, 11111, 11203 to 11206, 11208, 11209, 11209-A, 11210, 11212-A, 11213-A, 11214, 11215, 11221 to 11224, 11227, 11452, 11453, 11502, 11752, 11801, 12301-A and 12303-A) and from Title 17-A, section 402 at https://legislature.maine.gov/statutes/17-A/title17-Asec402.html. All were read on 2026-10-13; each question names its section. The course facts (the 50-question exam and its 70% pass score, the firearm handling demonstration, course formats, ages) are the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's own, read the same day on its Firearms Hunter Safety page at https://www.maine.gov/ifw/programs-resources/educational-programs/safety-courses/firearms-hunter-safety.html; that page is the published outline this page follows. It gives no time limit for the exam, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Maine Revised Statutes and the facts on the department's public page; nothing is copied from a hunter safety manual, a workbook, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.

Rules that are Maine's own

Nobody hunts on Sunday. In the firearm season on deer, hunters wear two articles of hunter orange, one a solid orange hat. No firearm is discharged within 100 yards of a building without permission. A deer is tagged, then registered within 18 hours.

What is asked here

Maine hunting laws are one of six topics of the in-person session, and the one asked here. Exam mode uses the length and pass mark the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife publishes.

  • A hunter under 10 stays within 20 feet of the junior hunter supervisor.
  • Four or more people moving deer together is an unlawful drive.
