How this list was compiled: Written from the Annotated Code of Maryland, Natural Resources Article, Title 10 (Wildlife): sections 10-101, 10-301, 10-301.1, 10-306, 10-402, 10-404, 10-405, 10-410, 10-411, 10-412, 10-413, 10-415, 10-416, 10-418, 10-421, 10-422 and 10-426, each read on the Maryland General Assembly's site, https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/Statutes, on 2026-10-09. Each question names its section and links to it. The course facts in the topic "The course and the 50 question test" (a 50 question test with an 80% standard to pass, the in-person class for students under 13, the Field Day Workshop, the one-year voucher) are the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' own, read the same day on its Hunter Education page, https://dnr.maryland.gov/wildlife/pages/hunter_education.aspx, which is the published outline this page follows. The Code of Maryland Regulations was not read and nothing is asked from it. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Maryland statutes and the facts on the Department's public page; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.

How it works

This unofficial Maryland hunter safety practice test asks the state's hunting law, Natural Resources Article Title 10, with the section under each answer. The real test also covers firearm safety, tree stands and first aid, which are not here.

What Maryland's own law adds

Section 10-410 bars hunting migratory game birds on any Sunday, and all Sunday hunting on public land in the State park system. Section 10-418 accepts fluorescent orange or pink. Section 10-415 wants a confirmation number before a deer's head or hide comes off.

The class before the test

Students under 13 take the multi-day in-person class. The hybrid course pairs online study with a one-day Field Day Workshop, and the voucher from the online part is good for one year.

  • Three distances: 150 yards from an occupied building, 300 yards from a school in session, 50 yards for archery hunters in counties such as Frederick.
  • Nighttime runs from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise; section 10-410(b) lets only raccoon and opossum be hunted then.

Questions and answers

Is this a Maryland hunter safety course practice test?

It is practice for the law part of the course. Every question is our own, written from Natural Resources Article Title 10; none comes from the Department's test, a course manual or an online course's chapter reviews.

How many questions are on the Maryland hunter safety test?

The Department of Natural Resources writes that both the classroom course and the hybrid course require a 50 question test with an 80% standard to pass. Students also show an instructor safe firearm handling and join a live-fire range event, which some classes waive.

Who needs a hunter safety certificate in Maryland?

Under section 10-301.1, anyone under 18 before hunting, and any license buyer who cannot produce a certificate, a hunting license issued before July 1, 1977, or an affidavit of having hunted before that date. The 3-day nonresident waterfowl license is outside the section.

Is this page from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources?

No. It is unofficial and not affiliated with the Department. Classes, the Field Day Workshop and replacement cards come only from the Department's hunter education page.
