Rules that are Louisiana's own
In the open gun deer season, hunters carrying buckshot, slugs, a muzzleloader or a centerfire rifle show 400 square inches of hunter orange or blaze pink. A deer is tagged before it is moved and validated within 72 hours.
What the course is
LDWF gives a free 10-hour in-person course, or an online course followed by a field day. It publishes no question count or pass mark for the written test, so none is claimed here.
A repeating shotgun holds three shells at most; a larger one is plugged with a one-piece filler.
Turkey ground stays a baited area for fifteen days after the last feed is removed.
Questions and answers
Who needs hunter education in Louisiana?
Anyone born on or after September 1, 1969, under R.S. 56:699.5. Active and veteran members of the armed services and POST-certified law enforcement officers may apply for an exemption that is valid only in Louisiana.
Can you hunt in Louisiana without hunter safety?
Yes, under direct supervision: within normal voice range and in direct line of sight of a licensed hunter born before September 1, 1969, or of a person 18 or older who has completed an approved course.
How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in Louisiana?
Any age may take the course, but only certification earned at 9 or older is valid for life. Younger students receive a 1-year voucher and take the whole course again after turning 9.
Can you take the Louisiana hunter safety course online?
Yes. Students aged 16 and over are certified by the online course alone. Students aged 9 to 15 follow the online course with an in-person field day of 5 hours, which includes a written test and a live-fire exercise.
