How it works

Unofficial practice for Florida's hunter safety course: our own questions from Florida Statutes section 379.3581 and the hunting rules the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) publishes. Firearm handling is practiced at the field day.

Rules that are Florida's own

Deer hunters on public land wear 500 square inches of orange above the waist. A deer or turkey is logged before it is moved and reported within 24 hours.

What the course is

By statute the course runs no more than 16 hours and is offered in every county, and a student who completes it is issued a permanent certification card.

  • Wild hogs on private land need no license and may be hunted year-round, day or night, with the landowner's permission.
  • A turkey may not be taken within 100 yards of a game feeding station while feed is present.

Questions and answers

Who has to take the hunter safety course in Florida?

Anyone born on or after June 1, 1975 who is 16 or older must pass it before buying a hunting license, under section 379.3581. Hunters exempt from the license, such as youth under 16, are exempt from the course too.

Can you hunt in Florida without a hunter safety course?

Yes, on a deferral. The license is marked for supervised hunting, and the hunter stays with an adult of 21 or older who holds a hunting license or is exempt and has met the hunter safety requirement.

How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in Florida?

The FWC says its course is designed for students 12 years old and up. A parent or guardian comes with children under 16, and students under 18 bring a signed Parental Release Form.

How many questions are on the Florida hunter safety test?

The FWC's course pages give no question count and no pass mark. They describe an online course of about 8 hours followed by a field day, or a traditional class with a hands-on field day.

Is this the official Florida hunter safety test?

No. It is unofficial and not affiliated with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The questions are our own, written from the statute and the commission's published rules; none comes from a course or its test.
