How it works

A Maryland permit holder drives beside a supervisor who is 21 or older and licensed for three years, with nobody else in the front seat. Wipers running means headlamps on. Each of the 416 questions in this unofficial Maryland permit practice test comes from a section of the Transportation Article, read on 19 September 2026. Another 48 cover federal road signs.

Twenty-five questions, twenty minutes

The Motor Vehicle Administration's knowledge test page, checked 19 September 2026, sets the Class C test at 25 questions and 20 minutes, with 88 percent or higher to pass, which is 22 right. Exam mode is set to those numbers, clock included. Switch to Exam mode below the question and press Start the exam to start the clock. Nothing is marked until you finish or the time runs out. You then see your score against 22 and a line per topic. The MVA's page adds that a failed test may be retaken the next day. Maryland has no DMV, only the MVA.

Bicycles, hazard lights and teen passengers

Section 21-1209 requires at least 3 feet when passing a bicycle, and section 21-307 lets a driver cross into a no-passing zone to do it, by the minimum needed. Section 21-405 tells a driver to change lanes or slow down for any stopped vehicle showing hazard lights or flares. Section 21-1123 bars most passengers under 18 for the first 151 days of a provisional license held by a driver under 18.

  • Section 16-105 shapes the permit: under 19, the driving test comes at least 9 months later, after 60 logged practice hours, 10 of them at night.
  • Section 16-205.1 sets a 270-day suspension for a first chemical test refusal and 2 years for a second.
  • Stop at least 20 feet from a school bus with its red lights flashing alternately (section 21-706).

Questions and answers

Are these the Maryland permit test questions and answers?

No. This site has never seen the administration's questions. It is an unofficial MVA practice permit test: each question was written from a section of the Transportation Article and links to it on mgaleg.maryland.gov. The agency's own Online Driver Test Tutorial is on mva.maryland.gov.

Is there an MVA permit test cheat sheet PDF?

Not here. The administration says its knowledge test questions come from the Maryland Driver's Manual, so the manual is the Maryland permit test study guide to read first. This bank covers the statutes behind it.

Who can take the Maryland learner's permit test?

Section 16-103 sets the minimum age at 15 years, 9 months. The agency's permit page, checked 19 September 2026, puts a vision screening and the knowledge test in one appointment. Its fee page lists $65 for a first learner's permit.
