How it works
Wipers on means headlights on in Massachusetts. A driver under 18 may not use a phone, hands-free included, and an engine may idle five minutes at most. Each of the 348 questions in this unofficial Massachusetts permit practice test comes from a section of the General Laws, read on malegislature.gov on 19 September 2026. Another 48 cover federal road signs.

Twenty-five questions against the clock
The Registry of Motor Vehicles' permit page, checked 19 September 2026, sets the Class D exam at 25 questions, 25 minutes and 18 correct to pass, which is 72 percent. Exam mode, below the question, uses those numbers, clock included. The clock starts when you press Start the exam. The page says the test is offered online or at a service center, in 37 languages.
Bicycles, fender benders and thickly settled districts
Chapter 90, section 14 asks for at least 4 feet when passing a vulnerable user such as a pedestrian or bicyclist. Chapter 89, section 2 tells a driver who cannot pass a bicyclist at a safe distance in the same lane to use the adjacent lane, crossing the centerline if necessary. Section 7D says to move a drivable car out of the travel lane after a crash with no injuries. Chapter 90, section 17 treats more than 30 mph in a thickly settled district, held for an eighth of a mile, as evidence of unreasonable speed.
Chapter 90, section 8B shapes the permit: a licensed driver, 21 or older with a year of experience, sits beside you, and under 18 there is no driving from midnight to 5 a.m. without a licensed parent or guardian.
Under chapter 90, section 24, an officer takes the license of a driver under 21 on the spot at 0.02 or more. The adult line is 0.08.
Stay 100 feet behind a school bus (chapter 90, section 14) and 300 feet behind fire apparatus bound for a fire (chapter 89, section 7A).
Questions and answers
Is this the RMV permit test?
No. This site has never seen the registry's exam. Each question was written from a section of the General Laws and links to it on malegislature.gov. The registry's driver's manuals are on mass.gov.
What should a Mass RMV permit practice test cover?
The registry's permit page names one study source, the Class D driver's manual. This bank covers the statutes behind it in eight topics. Each explanation ends with a chapter and section, so any rule can be checked.
Who can get a Massachusetts learner's permit?
Section 8B sets the minimum age at 16 and a term of two years. The registry's page, checked 19 September 2026, adds written parental consent under 18, a vision screening and a $30 fee.
