How this list was compiled: Written from the Iowa Code 2026, chapter 321 (motor vehicles and law of the road) and chapter 321J (operating while intoxicated), as published by the Iowa Legislature at https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/code/321.pdf and https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/code/321J.pdf, checked 2026-09-19. Each question names its section and links to that section's page on legis.iowa.gov. Exam format: no Iowa Department of Transportation page read on 2026-09-19 prints the length or pass mark of the real knowledge test, and Iowa Administrative Code rule 761-604.9 (https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/iac/chapter/761.604.pdf) says only that the department declares the minimum passing score for each test and that a test score is valid for 180 days, so the page carries no exam numbers. The department's own online practice test draws 25 questions and calls 80 percent a passing score (https://iowadot.gov/drivers-licenses-ids/driver-education/manuals-practice-tests/take-practice-test). Permit age 14, the at-home and at-school test options and the supervision list: https://iowadot.gov/drivers-licenses-ids/get-or-renew-drivers-licenses-ids-permits/under-18-permit-license-or-id/instruction-permit-under-age-18 and https://iowadot.gov/drivers-licenses-ids/driver-education/online-permit-test-skip-trip. How it works

Iowa puts a stop duty into the yellow light, caps speed at 20 mph past a school bus flashing amber, and wants high beams down within 1,000 feet of oncoming traffic. This unofficial Iowa permit practice test draws on Iowa Code chapter 321: 275 questions, each with a section link, plus 48 on road signs. Code read 19 September 2026.

Who gives the knowledge test

The Iowa Department of Transportation writes the operator's knowledge test. Driver's license stations and county treasurers' offices give it. The state has no DMV, so permit and license both use that DOT exam. Iowa Code 321.186 sets its scope: highway signs and state traffic laws.

Rules Iowa words its own way

Gravel secondary roads run 55 mph by day and 50 after sunset (321.285). A turn signal stays on for the last 100 feet where the limit is 45 or less, 300 feet above that (321.315). Headlamps go on at sunset, with no half-hour margin (321.384).

  • Section 321.180B sets the ladder: permit at 14, twelve months and 20 logged hours before an intermediate license at 16, then a 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.
  • Under 21, the alcohol line is .02 (321J.2A). A first chemical test refusal means a one-year revocation, against 180 days for a first failed test.
  • Passing on two lanes, be back on the right 300 feet before oncoming traffic where the limit is above 30 mph, and 100 feet at 30 or less (321.303).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Iowa permit test?

The Iowa DOT does not publish it: its permit page, Driver's Manual and rule 761-604.9 give the test no length. The rule says only that the department declares the minimum passing score. The DOT's online practice test draws 25 questions and calls 80 percent a pass. Exam mode here draws 25, with no pass mark. Switch to it below the question and press Start the exam for a score by topic. Checked 19 September 2026.

Is this the Iowa DOT's own practice test?

No. That one lives on iowadot.gov, and the department says its questions come from a larger group that includes real knowledge test questions. Take it. This page is unofficial: nobody here has seen the DOT's pool, and every question was written from the Iowa Code.

Can I take the Iowa permit test at home?

Yes, if you are within 30 days of your 14th birthday and under 18. The DOT's Skip the Trip page says a parent or guardian with a valid Iowa license applies to proctor, approval takes 7 to 14 days, the emailed link expires after 72 hours, and a phone or tablet will not do. The permit is still issued in person.
