How it works
Kentucky opens its written exam at 15 and passes it at 80 percent. This unofficial Kentucky permit practice test works the law side: 263 free questions from the Kentucky Revised Statutes and the point system regulation, read on the legislature's site on 18 September 2026, plus 48 on federal road signs.

No DMV: State Police test, the Cabinet issues
Kentucky has no Department of Motor Vehicles: the State Police give the exams and Transportation Cabinet regional offices issue the permit. Since 5 July 2022 the test can be booked at any regional office, so the exam a Louisville applicant takes is the one given statewide. A driver may cross the center line in a no-passing zone to give a bicycle 3 feet (KRS 189.340). No one outside a funeral procession may drive between its vehicles (KRS 189.378). A stopped garbage truck with its lights flashing means slow to a safe speed and go around with caution (KRS 189.377).
What KRS 186.450 asks of a permit holder
The permit opens at 15, with a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the next seat. Under 18, there is no driving from midnight to 6 a.m. without good cause, and no more than one unrelated passenger under 20. An intermediate license waits for 180 permit days and, under KRS 186.452, 60 practice hours, 10 at night. Seven points can suspend a driver under 18. Adults get 12.
The manual prints no test length, so the 25 in Exam mode, below the question, are this site's choice.
KRS 189.390 sets 65 mph on interstates and parkways, 55 on other state highways and 35 in business and residential districts.
Failing to yield the left lane and improper lane use each cost 3 points under 601 KAR 13:025.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Kentucky permit test?
Neither agency prints a number. The Kentucky Driver Manual, updated 23 July 2026 and posted on the State Police driver testing page, asks for a minimum score of 80 percent, and the Transportation Cabinet's first issuance page adds no count. Both checked 18 September 2026.
What does the written exam cover?
Driving rules, regulations, procedures and highway signs, the manual says. Tablets at testing offices can read the test aloud, but the signs portion must be answered from your own knowledge, so set Topic to a sign topic, such as Warning signs, for the 48 sign questions here.
Is this the exam the State Police give?
No. The State Police name the Kentucky Driver Manual as the only source material for their exam, which this site has not seen. The questions here come from the statutes, so each explanation ends in a KRS or 601 KAR 13:025 citation.
