How it works

This unofficial Ohio permit practice test is a temps practice test built from the Ohio Revised Code: 164 state law questions plus 48 on federal road signs. The answers are Ohio's own numbers, such as 70 mph on rural freeways. Sections last read 18 September 2026.

Temps: the BMV's 40-question test

Ohio calls the learner's permit a temporary instruction permit, temps for short, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles runs the knowledge test. The state has no DMV. The Revised Code has details a national quiz misses. Lights go on whenever the wipers run, though that rule alone cannot be the reason for a stop (section 4513.03). A funeral procession is marked by headlights and a purple and white or orange and white pennant, and may follow its lead car through a light that turns red (4511.451). Passing a bicycle safely means 3 feet or more (4511.27).

Two sections that changed on 20 March 2026

Section 4507.21 now asks every license applicant under 21 for a driver training course and an affidavit of 50 practice hours, 10 at night. Section 4507.05 sets temps at age 15 years 6 months and bars holders under 18 from driving between midnight and 6 a.m. without a licensed parent, guardian or custodian beside them.

  • In daytime fog, lights are required once objects 1,000 feet ahead cannot be made out (section 4513.03).
  • Ohio speed follows the road class under section 4511.21: 70 mph on rural freeways, 65 on rural expressways without signals, 55 on ordinary rural highways.
  • Section 4513.15 gives no set distance for dimming high beams, only a ban on glare.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Ohio permit test, and how many can you miss?

Forty multiple-choice questions on motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs, and you can miss 10: 30 correct (75 percent) pass, per the Ohio BMV driver license page checked 18 September 2026. After a failed try, wait at least 24 hours. In-person attempts are not capped.

Can I take my permit test online in Ohio?

Yes. The BMV page says applicants aged at least 15 years 6 months may test through Ohio BMV Online Services, at a driver exam station or at select deputy registrar offices. Online testing is limited to two attempts in six months, and the vision screening then happens at the deputy registrar.

Did these questions come from the BMV?

No. They were written for this site from the Ohio Revised Code, and nobody at the BMV has reviewed them. Each explanation carries its section number and a link to codes.ohio.gov, so any rule can be checked against the law. The BMV posts its own short sample test.
