How this list was compiled: Written from the Wisconsin Statutes, chapters 340, 341, 343, 344, 346 and 347, in the updated 2023-24 text the Legislature published on September 4, 2026, at https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/346.pdf and its sister chapters, and from Wis. Admin. Code chapters Trans 129 and Trans 305, https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/code/admin_code/trans/129.pdf and https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/code/admin_code/trans/305.pdf, all checked 2026-09-18. Each question names its section. Statute questions link to the section. The 21 Trans 129 and Trans 305 questions link to the chapter file, which the Legislature publishes as one PDF; search that file for the section number shown under the question. Exam facts on the page come from the Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles, https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/teen-driver/teen-hw-aply/knowledge.aspx and https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/motorcycles/mc-how-aply/mc-md-lic.aspx, checked 2026-09-18: walk-in knowledge tests on touch-screen computers, about 45 minutes for the Class M test, and a retake no sooner than the next day. Neither page publishes a question count or pass mark for the Class M knowledge test, so none is used here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and administrative code text; nothing is copied from the Wisconsin Motorcyclists' Handbook, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.
How it works
Wisconsin puts headgear on every instruction permit holder and eye protection on every operator. This unofficial Wisconsin motorcycle permit practice test asks 125 questions written from the Wisconsin Statutes and the Trans 129 and Trans 305 rules, with the section under each one. Law read September 2026.

Headgear, eye protection and the six-month permit
Section 347.485 asks for headgear only under 18 and on an instruction permit, yet every operator needs a face shield, glasses or goggles unless a windshield rises 15 inches above the handlebar. Section 343.07(4) gives the permit six months and bars passengers other than a passenger-instructor. Under 18, s. 343.06(1)(c) puts a basic rider course ahead of any Class M license, with few exemptions.
What the Wisconsin DMV publishes about the test
The DMV's knowledge test page describes a walk-in test on a touch-screen computer that takes about 45 minutes, in English or Spanish. A failed test can be retaken the next day. The page gives no question count or pass mark, so Exam mode asks 25, this site's length, with no pass line. Riding technique is not in this bank: the DMV says its Motorcyclists' Handbook holds what the real test asks.
In the Start from menu, start with Permits, Class M and the rider course: six months, three permits at most.
Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Marks come at the end. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.
Trans 129 and Trans 305 questions link the whole chapter: search it for the section number.
Questions and answers
Can I carry a passenger on a Wisconsin motorcycle permit?
Only one kind. Section 343.07(4)(b)1. bars passengers except a passenger-instructor, a person with at least 2 years of licensed driving experience whose license is endorsed for motorcycles. During hours of darkness, subdivision 2. lets the permit holder ride only when accompanied by such a person aged 25 or more.
How do I get a motorcycle permit in Wisconsin?
The DMV's motorcycle license page lists the motorcycle knowledge test and the signs test, plus a vision screening if none is on file. A rider under 18 must be at least 16 and needs a sponsor, completed driver education and proof of being enrolled in a basic rider course. The permit then runs six months under s. 343.07(4).
Is this the Wisconsin DMV's own motorcycle test?
It is not. This page is not a government website, is not affiliated with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and has never seen the DMV's questions. All 125 were written from statute and administrative code text, none from the Motorcyclists' Handbook.
