How it works
Wisconsin calls the instruction permit "temps", and earning one means passing a 50-question knowledge test and a separate 15-question highway signs test. This unofficial Wisconsin permit practice test covers both: 165 questions written from the Wisconsin Statutes, each linked to its section, and 48 on federal road signs. Statutes checked 18 September 2026.

Two tests at the DMV counter, not one
Wisconsin does have a DMV. The Wisconsin DMV permit test is a pair. The 2026 Motorists' Handbook describes a knowledge test of 50 questions with 40 to pass, and a highway signs test of 15 with 12 to pass. Both are free and walk-in at a DMV customer service center. Ages 15 to 17 may instead test at home for $10 each while a parent or guardian monitors. Exam mode, below the question, copies the 50-question test's length and pass mark. For signs, pick a sign topic in the Start from menu.
Where chapter 346 parts ways with a national quiz
Freeways are 70 mph and expressways 65 under section 346.57. Behind a working snowplow, keep 200 feet where the limit is over 35 mph and 75 feet where it is lower (346.915). Stop 20 feet from a school bus flashing red (346.48). A motorcyclist at a red light that never detects the bike may go after 45 seconds (346.37). Under the legal drinking age, any alcohol concentration above 0.0 is a violation (346.63).
The Exam mode result reads Passed at ten misses, Below the mark at eleven, and scores each topic. The signs test allows three.
Permit holders pay double: section 343.32(2)(bc) doubles the demerit points on a second or later conviction, and 12 points in 12 months brings a suspension.
Under 18? Sections 343.06 and 343.085 ask for 50 logged hours, 10 after dark, and six months on the permit with no moving violation conviction.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Wisconsin permit test?
Fifty on the knowledge test, with 40 correct to pass, and 15 on the separate highway signs test, with 12 to pass. Source: Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, 2026 edition, checked 18 September 2026. The DMV's knowledge test page adds that a retake waits until the next day.
What does a Wisconsin instruction permit cost?
The DMV fee page lists the Class D instruction permit at $35, checked 18 September 2026. Section 343.07 sets a minimum age of 15 and a life of 18 months, and requires driver education enrollment under 18.
Is this the practice test the Wisconsin DMV publishes?
No. The DMV runs its own free Class D practice test. This page is separate and unofficial: each question cites a section of the Wisconsin Statutes, and this site has never seen the DMV's questions.
