How it works

This unofficial West Virginia permit practice test holds 207 free questions from the West Virginia Code, each naming its section, plus 48 on federal road signs. Exam mode, below the question, follows the figures in the Division of Motor Vehicles handbook: 25 questions, 19 correct to pass.

What the state's knowledge test looks like

The Driver's Licensing Handbook, checked 19 September 2026, describes a timed, automated knowledge test of at least 25 questions and says 19 of the 25 must be right. At 15 it leads to a Level 1 permit, at $7.50 per attempt. Adults 18 and older sit the same test for an instruction permit. Before testing, a teen needs a parent or guardian's written consent and a certified birth certificate or valid U.S. passport (§17B-2-3a).

Mountain rules in Chapter 17C

The West Virginia Code still carries mountain driving law. On a mountain highway the horn is sounded before a curve where the view is blocked within 200 feet (§17C-14-7), and coasting downhill in neutral is barred (§17C-14-8). Headlights are required from sunset to sunrise, in fog, smoke or rain, and whenever people and vehicles cannot be seen clearly 500 feet ahead (§17C-15-2). Passing a bicycle takes not less than 3 feet (§17C-7-3).

  • W. Va. Code §17C-6-1 sets 15 mph in a school zone, 25 in a business or residence district and 55 on open country highway.
  • A school zone runs 125 feet along the street from the school grounds, and speeding in a signposted one is fined $100 to $500 (§17C-6-1).
  • A hands-free phone feature may take a single touch or swipe to start or end. Reading a text while driving is banned (§17C-14-15).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the permit test in WV?

At least 25, and 19 of 25 must be correct, which is 76 percent. Both figures are in the Driver's Licensing Handbook, checked 18 September 2026. It says the test is timed without giving a limit, so Exam mode here sets no clock.

Is this the West Virginia DMV permit test?

No. It is an unofficial practice test, and none of its questions come from the state's exam or sample test. They are written from the West Virginia Code, so the rules match, while the wording on test day will differ. The division posts its own sample test on dmv.wv.gov.

What happens if I fail the West Virginia knowledge test?

A failed test means a one-week wait before the next try (§17B-2-6), and the handbook's fee table lists $7.50 per attempt. Exam mode's 25 questions match the shortest test the handbook describes, with 19 right to pass. Its result adds a line for each topic.
