How it works

Nebraska hands out driving privileges in steps: a school learner's permit at 14, the LPD learner's permit at 15, a provisional permit at 16. This unofficial Nebraska permit practice test covers the law behind each step with 419 questions written from chapter 60 of the Nebraska Revised Statutes, each linked to its section, plus 48 on road signs.

What the state tells you before test day

The Department of Motor Vehicles gives the Nebraska learner's permit test at its driver licensing offices, with a vision check. Its learner's permit page, checked in September 2026, takes applications up to 60 days before a 15th birthday and issues nothing until you turn 15. The permit runs one year, with a licensed driver aged 21 or older beside you. Section 60-4,114 also allows a remotely proctored knowledge test.

Permits that start at 14

Section 60-4,124 allows an LPE learner's permit after the 14th birthday. A school permit follows after two months with the LPE, for teens who live or attend school outside a metropolitan, primary or first class city, and it covers the most direct route to school. A Nebraska learners permit test taken at 14 means a written examination and a vision check, the same two steps the LPD asks for at 15.

  • Section 60-4,183 revokes a license at 12 points in two years.
  • Under 21, the alcohol limit is 0.02. Section 60-6,211.02 has the court impound the license for 30 days, or 90 for refusing the test.
  • Outside town, stay 100 feet behind a snowplow working with its amber or white light flashing (section 60-6,140), and 500 feet behind a fire truck answering an alarm (60-6,183).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Nebraska permit test?

The Department of Motor Vehicles prints no number. Its learner's permit page, practice exam page and Class O Driver's Manual gave no question count or pass mark when checked in September 2026, so the 25 questions in Exam mode, below the question, are this site's number. Ask at a driver licensing office.

Is the permit test Nebraska gives at a licensing office the same as this one?

No. This page is unofficial practice written from the statutes and holds none of the department's live questions. The state runs its own online practice test and says those questions come from the same pool as the actual exam.

What does a provisional operator's permit allow at 16?

Section 60-4,120.01 lets a 16-year-old who has held a learner's or school permit for six months drive alone from 6 a.m. to midnight, and later only between home and work or a school activity. For the first six months, one passenger under 19 from outside the immediate family is the limit.
