Scoring key

Unofficial practice sheet
Not the state's form DMV-DT-1. Rows restate that form and the handbook; counting how often a row went wrong is ours.
1, 3, 5 or 10 on the form
What every road test line but the signs line carries; only the highest value circled in a row counts. The form does not say what earns each value, so no row here carries one.
The form's road test score 10 or less
Passing, in the form's points. Not a count of errors, so this sheet draws no pass line.

All 65 lines

General driving, curves, parking spaces and signs: West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (rev. 07/2026), pp. 30-31, and the score form it reprints 10

  • Curve: speed in, speed through Four form lines: speed on entering, speed through, stay in lane, regular traffic checks. The handbook: reduce speed before entering so that no further braking is needed in the curve, and follow posted warning signs. Count each fault.
  • Gap behind the car ahead 'Following distance' on the form; the handbook says only that a safe one is kept. Count each time the gap closed up.
  • Hands outside the wheel Both hands on the outside of the steering wheel unless using another control. The handbook accepts hand over hand and hand to hand, and names palming as not allowed. Count each lapse.
  • Harsh braking, by the handbook The handbook's first general driving point: brake smoothly, using steady pressure, not harshly. It has no line of its own on the form. Count each harsh stop.
  • Lane change, three form lines Turn signals, traffic or head check, smooth. The handbook's order: mirrors, a look over the shoulder, signal, change when safe, cancel the signal, check traffic. Count each step left out.

General driving, curves, parking spaces and signs: West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (rev. 07/2026), pp. 30-31, and the score form it reprints, continued

  • Lane picked, lane held Two form lines: selects proper lane, keeps vehicle in lane. The handbook wants the car centered in the proper lane, the right-most one, unless it is blocked. Count each time it was not.
  • Parking space, out or in The form's non-parallel parking part, exit or enter space: signal, head or traffic check, smooth acceleration and deceleration, correct steering or backing. Count each of the four missed.
  • Sign you just passed, named The examiner may ask what sign you just passed; the form says two are picked at random and gives this line 1 or 3 only. Count each sign the learner could not name.
  • Speed against the flow The handbook: move at the pace of traffic, but do not exceed the posted speed limit. Count each stretch too fast or holding traffic up.
  • Traffic, cross-traffic looks Two form lines, regular traffic checks and checks cross traffic. The handbook asks for traffic and mirrors checked regularly, and before, during and after an intersection, turn or lane change. Count each look missed.

Turns and intersections: handbook p. 29 and the reprinted form 8

  • After the turn: lane, signal Form lines move to right lane with a head check, and signal or cancel signal. The handbook: finish in the correct lane with the signal canceled, then move to the right-most lane when safe. Count each missed.
  • In the turn: hands, speed, arc Form lines both hands, speed, wide or short. The handbook: do not move into oncoming traffic or drive over the curb. Count each turn that went wrong.
  • Intersection: going through Form lines both hands, speed, maintain lane. The handbook: yield to any pedestrian or traffic in the intersection and change no lanes inside it. Count each fault.
  • Intersection: once clear Form lines accelerate, move to right lane with a head check, signal or cancel signal. Count each one missed after the intersection.
  • Intersection: slowing, stop Form lines decelerate and maintain lane, then necessary, smooth, stop line or gap. The handbook: stop behind any stop sign, signal, sidewalk or stop line, never in the intersection. Count each fault.
  • Road test errors, this drive The seventeen rows above, one column per drive. The examiner's figure is points on the state's form, which this sheet does not copy, so this number is not a score.
  • Stop before a turn Four form lines under 'if stop': necessary, smooth, stop line or gap, wheels straight. The handbook: a full stop without skidding, the rear tires of the vehicle ahead in view, front wheels aimed straight ahead. Count each fault.
  • Turn approach: signal, slow Form lines signal and decelerate. The handbook: check traffic in all directions, use the correct signal, brake smoothly and evenly, get into the lane the turn needs. Count each missed.

Automatic failures on the road: handbook p. 31 7

  • Avoidable crash or contact An avoidable crash, any physical contact with other vehicles, objects or pedestrians, any unsafe act, or another driver forced to take evasive action. Type how many.
  • Citation, sign or signal A traffic citation for a moving violation; disobeying signs or signals; speeding; rolling through stops; ignoring traffic laws, a traffic control device or the examiner's lawful direction. Type how many.
  • Examiner took the controls If the examiner has to take control of the vehicle. The handbook's list goes on: being dangerously inexperienced, refusing a maneuver, not wearing required glasses. In practice, type each time the supervising driver took over.
  • No yield to road users Not yielding to pedestrians or other roadway users. Type how many.
  • Over a sidewalk or curb Putting the vehicle over or on top of sidewalks or curbs unnecessarily. Type how many.
  • Safety belt not used First box of the form's automatic failures. Type how many times the belt was off.
  • Wireless device used The handbook: if at any time you use your wireless communications device. It is on the handbook's list, not among the form's boxes. Type how many.

Parallel parking: handbook pp. 27-29 and the reprinted form 9

  • Camera alone relied on 'Solely relies on camera' is Fail on the form. Type 1 if the learner parked by the screen without looking around.
  • Curb climbed 'Climbs curb' on the form, the one parking line marked 2 or 4. The handbook's short list of automatic failures has jumping the curb during any part of the driving test. Count each time a wheel went up.
  • Curb tapped 'Taps curb' on the form. Count each touch of the curb in this attempt.
  • 'Fail' lines, this attempt The three rows above; each reads Fail on the form in place of a number.
  • Parking errors, this attempt The four rows above. The form's own figure is points over all attempts combined, so this is not that score.
  • Parking: head checks missed 'Head/traffic check(s)' on the form. The handbook: make sure the roadway is clear in both directions before entering, backing into traffic or leaving. Count each look missed.
  • Parking: signal errors The handbook counts each failure to use the turn signal, or improper use of it, as an error when turning, backing, and entering or leaving the area. Count them for this attempt.
  • Past 18 inches, third attempt The form: outside the 18 inch curb line after three attempts is Fail. Type 1 in the third column if the car still sat farther out.
  • Standard, cone or flag hit 'Hits standard' is Fail on the form; the handbook's wording is hitting, tapping or moving a cone, barrel or flag. Type how many.

You must show proper use of these: test component check list, p. 26 9

  • Defroster and heater 'Defroster/Heater' on the list. Type 1 when the learner can find and run both.
  • Hazard lights shown On both lists; the form checks them front and back. Type 1 when the learner can switch them on.
  • Headlights, high and low beam First on the list of things you must demonstrate proper use of. Type 1 when the learner can switch between the two beams.
  • Horn shown On both lists. Type 1 when the learner can sound it.
  • Parking or emergency brake The form checks location and application only. The handbook names this brake when it says the applicant must know where every piece of safety equipment is and what it does. Type 1 when found and set.
  • Seat belt fastened and shown Last on the list of things to demonstrate. Type 1 when shown.
  • Tilt steering 'Tilt (Steering)' on the list, with nothing more said. Type 1 when the learner can adjust the wheel, where the car has the feature.
  • Turn or directional signals On both lists; the form checks front and back. Type 1 when the learner can work both sides.
  • Windshield wipers shown On both lists: shown in use, and fully functional. Type 1 when the learner can run them.

These must work fully: check list, p. 26 6

  • Back-up, brake and tail lights Three items on the list of features that must be fully functional. Type 1 when all three light.
  • Exhaust system sound On the functional list; a cut-out or loud-sounding muffler is on the handbook's list of illegal equipment. Type 1 when in order.
  • Foot brake works On the functional list, apart from the parking brake. Type 1 when it holds the car.
  • Glass; driver's window opens Safety glass, windshield and windows, with the driver side window operational. A broken or cracked windshield is on the illegal equipment list. Type 1 when in order.
  • License plate light 'Registration/License Plate Light' on the list. Type 1 when it lights.
  • Tires in order One word on the list: tires. Type 1 when checked.

With the test vehicle: pp. 25-26 4

  • Insurance proof for this car Before the road skills test may be taken in a vehicle, proof of valid insurance on it is required. Type 1 when it is in the car.
  • Plate and registration card A valid license plate and registration card. Type 1 when both are with the car.
  • Ready count, of eighteen A full column reaches eighteen. The count is our addition; the handbook's check list has no total.
  • State inspection sticker A valid vehicle state inspection sticker. Type 1 when it is current.

Scoring key 12

  • 1, 3, 5 or 10 on the form What every road test line but the signs line carries; only the highest value circled in a row counts. The form does not say what earns each value, so no row here carries one.
  • A minor defect The examiner may let you have it corrected and continue the examination, but not with a different vehicle on that test date (p. 25).
  • A subset of five exercises Left side parallel park, right side parallel park, forward two-point turnabout, reverse two-point turnabout, three-point turnabout: you may be tested on a subset (p. 27). The reprinted form has score lines for parallel parking.
  • The course Of reasonable length; may include, if possible, a moderate grade, a right turn, a left turn, and a stop sign or traffic control light (p. 26).
  • The form's parking score Passing, over all attempts combined, in the form's points: each line is marked 1 or 2 per attempt, a climbed curb 2 or 4, highest value circled in each row.
  • The form's road test score Passing, in the form's points. Not a count of errors, so this sheet draws no pass line.
  • Hands-free parking device If the vehicle is equipped with one it must be deactivated, the form says.
  • Locate and demonstrate An applicant unable to both locate and demonstrate the use of any of the vehicle's safety equipment fails the road skills test automatically (p. 25).
  • One week An applicant who fails the knowledge test or the road skills test cannot test again inside one week (handbook p. 26, citing section 17B-2-6 of the state code).
  • Other parts first The driving examination is not given until all other parts are passed, and the applicant must get to the testing center lawfully (p. 26).
  • Three attempts The form has a column for a first, second and third attempt at parallel parking. Use one column here for each.
  • Unofficial practice sheet Not the state's form DMV-DT-1. Rows restate that form and the handbook; counting how often a row went wrong is ours.

How this list was compiled: From two texts of the State of West Virginia, both read 2026-10-04. First, the Driver's Licensing Handbook of the Division of Motor Vehicles, marked 'Revised 07/2026' on its cover, pages 25 to 31, and the examiner's score form it reprints on the two pages after page 31 (form DMV-DT-1, rev. 7/2014, Driver Skills Test, Class E): https://webapps.transportation.wv.gov/TWS/DMV/Drivers_Licensing_Handbook.pdf. No copyright line was found in the handbook. Second, section 17B-2-7 of the West Virginia Code, which makes an actual demonstration of ability to exercise ordinary and reasonable control in the operation of a motor vehicle part of the examination: https://code.wvlegislature.gov/17B-2-7/. A test is arranged with the Division, not here. Taken from the handbook, each in our own words and in an order of our own: the lines of the reprinted form's road test and parallel parking parts, several of them joined into one row; the handbook's descriptions of turns, intersections, lane changes, curves, signs and general driving (pp. 29 to 31); both lists of automatic failures (pp. 29 and 31); the test component check list and the vehicle check (pp. 25 and 26); the form's two passing lines and the one-week wait before another test. Ours, not the state's: the layout, the row names, the joining of form lines, counting how often a row went wrong, and typing 1 for a line that is ready. The form gives each road line 1, 3, 5 or 10 and each parking line 1 or 2 (a climbed curb 2 or 4) and counts only the highest value circled in a row, but prints nothing on what earns each value, so these sheets count errors, copy no point values onto a row and draw no pass line. This is not form DMV-DT-1 and cannot be handed in as one; nobody at the Division has seen it. Licence: own work

How it works

An unofficial WV driving test score sheet for practice. Its rows restate the examiner's form reprinted in West Virginia's Driver's Licensing Handbook (revised 07/2026), read October 4, 2026. Not the DMV's form; this page books no test.

Road, parking space, then the car

1. The road test shows first. Press Print blank sheet; Parallel parking and Before the drive print the same way.

2. During the drive, the supervising driver your permit requires marks paper only at stops, and speaks up or takes over the moment it is needed.

3. Once parked, type how often each row went wrong, a column per drive.

4. On the parking sheet, give each attempt its own column; the state's form has three.

5. On the before-the-drive checklist, type 1 for each control the learner can find and work, each part that works and each paper in the car.

Questions and answers

Is this the WV driving test score sheet examiners use?

No. The state's form is DMV-DT-1, reprinted in the Driver's Licensing Handbook after its road test pages. This page restates its lines in our own words and order, joins some, and counts errors where the form circles point values.

What score passes the West Virginia road test?

The reprinted form says a road test score of 10 or less passes, and 4 points or less on parallel parking over all attempts. Nearly every road line carries 1, 3, 5 or 10, and only the highest value circled in a row counts.

Why do these sheets count errors, not points?

The form prints the values but not what earns a 1, 3, 5 or 10, so the examiner's scoring cannot be reproduced from it. These sheets count how often each line went wrong and draw no pass line.

What is an automatic failure on the WV road test?

The handbook lists them on page 31, among them not using the safety belt, using a wireless device, not yielding, an avoidable crash, putting the vehicle over a sidewalk or curb, and the examiner having to take control.

How soon can you retake the WV driving test?

Not within a week. The handbook says an applicant who fails the knowledge test or the road skills test cannot test again inside one week, citing section 17B-2-6 of the state code.
