A WV DNR hunter safety practice test on the state code
Deer hunters on public land or the land of another wear 400 square inches of blaze orange in the firearms and muzzleloader seasons. A field tag is completed before a deer, bear, boar or turkey is moved. No gun is fired within 500 feet of a school, a church or another person's dwelling.
What the course is
The Division of Natural Resources gives free in-person classes that usually take 12 hours and end in a written test. Students of the paid online courses sit the final test in person too.
Residents under 15 need no license, but hunt the land of another only with a licensed adult.
Sunday hunting on private land needs the landowner's written consent.
No certificate yet: an apprentice license lets a new hunter go out beside an adult of 18 or older who may lawfully hunt.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the WV hunter safety test?
The Division of Natural Resources' course page gives no question count and no pass mark for the written test. A scored test on this page draws 25 questions, a length this site chose, and reports a score with no verdict.
Who needs hunter education in West Virginia?
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1975 who wants a base hunting license. Section 20-2-30a also accepts last season's West Virginia license showing the certification, and an apprentice license puts the course off.
How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in WV?
The division's page gives one age line: a student who is not yet 10 years old on the day of the written test gets no permanent hunter education certification.
