How this list was compiled: Written from the IHEA-USA Education Standards for Bowhunter Education, the published outline of the bowhunter education course (overview, equipment and accessories, bowhunting safety, bow shooting skills, techniques and preparation, bowhunting responsibilities and game recovery), in the copy the National Bowhunter Education Foundation publishes at https://nbef.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/IHEAUSA_HunterEduStd_Bow_Digital23.pdf, read on 2026-10-12. Every question names the section and page of the standards it was written from and links to the document. The standards give learning objectives and their content; they give no number of questions and no pass mark for a course exam, so none is given here. No state's hunting law is asked: each state sets its own seasons, equipment rules and tagging rules. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the facts in the published standards; nothing is copied from a bowhunter education manual, an online course, a unit quiz or an examination.

How it works

Unofficial practice for a bowhunter education course exam: our own questions from the published IHEA-USA education standards for bowhunter education, each with its page. Drawing and aiming a bow, first aid and state hunting law are left to the course and to your state.

What a bowhunter education course covers

The standards have five parts: why the course exists, equipment and accessories, safety, shooting skills with preparation, and responsibilities with game recovery. They name falls from stands as the leading cause of hunting incidents in North America, so tree stand steps carry many of the questions.

  • Tree stand questions follow one order: secured from the ground up, three points of contact, the bow pulled up last on a haul line.
  • Know the three broadheads apart: fixed blade, removable blade, and mechanical, which the standards recommend only at 50 pounds of draw weight or more.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the bowhunter education exam?

The published standards set learning objectives and give no exam length or pass mark. A scored test on this page draws 25 questions, a length this site chose, and reports a score with no verdict.

Is bowhunter education required?

It depends on the state. The Ohio Division of Wildlife, for one, says Ohio does not require it, and that 11 states or more require the course to bowhunt. Ask the wildlife agency of the state you will hunt in.

Is this the official bowhunter education test?

No. This page is unofficial and not affiliated with the National Bowhunter Education Foundation, IHEA-USA or any state wildlife agency. Courses, final exams and certification cards come only from them.
