How this list was compiled: Written from Kentucky Revised Statutes Chapter 150 (Fish and Wildlife Resources) as published by the Legislative Research Commission at https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/chapter.aspx?id=37729 (KRS 150.010, 150.092, 150.170, 150.180, 150.235, 150.340, 150.360, 150.361, 150.362, 150.363, 150.365, 150.390 and 150.395), and from two Kentucky administrative regulations on the same site: 301 KAR 2:185, Hunter education, at https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/301/002/185/ and 301 KAR 2:172, Deer hunting seasons, zones, and requirements, at https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/301/002/172/. All were read on 2026-10-12; each question names its section and links to it. 301 KAR 2:185 is the published outline this page follows: an entire course, at least 80 percent on a department-sanctioned exam, and a live fire exercise. The course facts beyond the regulation (the written test and live-fire exercise at the final session, free materials, the Range Day, accepted certifications, the exemption permit) are the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources' own, read the same day on its Hunter Education page, https://fw.ky.gov/Education/Pages/Hunter-Education.aspx. Neither the regulation nor the department publishes a number of questions or a time limit for the exam, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Kentucky statutes and administrative regulations and the facts on the department's public page; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.
How it works
Unofficial practice for the written exam in Kentucky hunter education: our own questions from KRS Chapter 150 and the hunter education and deer regulations. Firearm safety, first aid and the live fire exercise belong to the course.

Rules that are Kentucky's own
In the gun deer seasons, hunters of any species show solid hunter orange on the head, back and chest. A deer is logged before the carcass is moved and checked before 11:59 p.m. on the day it is recovered.
A one-time exemption permit lets a new hunter go for one year beside a qualified adult.
Questions and answers
What score do you need to pass the KY hunter education test?
At least 80 percent of the questions, under 301 KAR 2:185. The regulation also requires attending an entire course and safely taking part in a live fire exercise. It states no question count; a round of 25 here is our own length.
Who needs hunter education in Kentucky?
Anyone born January 1, 1975 or later must carry proof of certification while hunting, unless license-exempt or holding the one-year exemption permit. A hunter under 12 may go without it beside a qualified adult.
How old do you have to be to take hunter education in Kentucky?
At least nine, for the exam and the live fire exercise, under 301 KAR 2:185. The department says certification is required at age 12.
Is this the official Kentucky hunter education exam?
No. It is unofficial and not affiliated with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. The questions are our own, written from the statutes and regulations; none comes from the department's exam or its course.
