How this list was compiled: Written from Wisconsin Statutes chapter 29 (Wild Animals and Plants) as published by the Wisconsin Legislature at https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/29 (sections 29.001, 29.011, 29.083, 29.301, 29.304, 29.307, 29.314, 29.324, 29.336, 29.337, 29.341, 29.345, 29.347, 29.591, 29.592 and 29.593, in the copy published October 1, 2026), and from Wisconsin Administrative Code chapter NR 10 (Game and Hunting) at https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/code/admin_code/nr/001/10 (sections NR 10.001, 10.06, 10.07 and 10.086, Register June 2026). Both were read on 2026-10-09; each question names its section and links to it. The course facts in the topic "The course" (the multiple-choice exam and skills assessment, the 19 hour limit, the $10 fee, the field day, the online-only course for adults) are the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' own, read the same day on its Safety Education page, https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/Education/OutdoorSkills/safetyEducation, which is the published outline this page follows. The department publishes no number of questions and no pass mark for the exam, so none is given here. Section 167.31 of the statutes (firearms in vehicles and near roads) was not read and nothing is asked from it. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Wisconsin statutes and administrative code and the facts on the department's public page; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.
How it works
Unofficial practice for the multiple-choice exam in Wisconsin hunter education: our own questions from chapter 29 of the statutes and chapter NR 10, each with its section. Firearm handling and the skills assessment are taught in the course.

Rules that are Wisconsin's own
During the firearm deer season at least half of each article of outer clothing above the waist is blaze orange or fluorescent pink. Shooting hours for deer run from 30 minutes before sunrise through 20 minutes after sunset. A deer is registered before 5 p.m. of the day after it is recovered.
What the exam is
The DNR says students sit a multiple-choice exam and a hands-on test of skills. It publishes no question count and no pass mark, so none is set here; a round of 25 is our own length.
Age steps: under 12 hunts only with a mentor within arm's reach; 12 and 13 are accompanied; 14 and 15 are accompanied or certified.
A first-time resident graduate may use the certificate as a small game license until March 31 of the following year.
Questions and answers
Is this a Wisconsin DNR hunter safety practice test?
No. It is unofficial and not affiliated with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The questions are our own, written from the statutes and the administrative code; none comes from the department's exam or its student manual.
Who needs hunter safety in Wisconsin?
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1973 who wants a hunting approval, under section 29.593. Hunting with a mentor under section 29.592 and completed basic training in the U.S. armed forces, reserves or national guard are the exceptions.
How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in Wisconsin?
The DNR says students of any age may take the traditional course or the internet field day course. A certificate earned before 12 is not valid for small game until the child turns 12, and the online-only course is for adults.
How much does hunter safety cost in Wisconsin?
The DNR lists $10 per student, paid to the instructor, for the traditional course and for the field day. The internet part before a field day is free. Online-only courses for adults charge their own fee plus a $10 state fee.
