How this list was compiled: Written from the Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 17 (Game and Fish), sections 17-101, 17-301, 17-301.01, 17-303, 17-304, 17-305, 17-307, 17-308, 17-309, 17-311, 17-312, 17-316, 17-319, 17-331, 17-332, 17-333, 17-333.02, 17-340, 17-341, 17-362 and 17-371, each opened at the Arizona Legislature site (https://www.azleg.gov/arsDetail/?title=17); from the Arizona Game and Fish Commission rules R12-4-302, R12-4-303 and R12-4-304 and the license and hunter education pages as the Arizona Game and Fish Department prints them in its 2026-27 Arizona Hunting Regulations (linked from https://www.azgfd.com/hunting/regulations/); and from two department pages, Hunter Education (https://www.azgfd.com/education/hunter-education-2/) and Hunter Education Classes (https://www.azgfd.com/education/hunter-education-2/hunter-education-classes/). All were read on 2026-10-13; each question names its section, rule or page. The course facts (who must be certified, ages 9, 10 and 14, the course formats) are the department's own; its Hunter Education Classes page is the published outline this page follows. The department publishes no number of questions and no pass mark for the course test, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Arizona statutes and commission rules and the facts on the department's public pages; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.

Rules that are Arizona's own

Trail cameras, deer urine scents and food set out for big game are all unlawful aids. Big game other than bear or mountain lion is never taken with dogs. A tag goes on the carcass immediately after the kill.

  • A child under 10 may hunt wildlife other than big game unlicensed beside a licensed adult of 18 or older, two children at most.
  • Posted land may be marked by posts with 100 square inches of orange paint.

Questions and answers

Do you need a hunter safety course to hunt in Arizona?

Only youth under 14 who hunt big game need it. Other hunters may buy a license without it, though finishing an Arizona course 30 days before a draw deadline also earns a bonus point in that draw.

How old do you have to be to take hunter education in Arizona?

Nine. The department's classroom course and field day are open to anyone aged 9 and up, and a youth must be 10 to hunt big game.

Can you take the Arizona hunter safety course online?

Arizona residents can. The online course is self-paced, and the field day is offered to online students but not required. The classroom course is open to residents and nonresidents.

How close to a house can you hunt in Arizona?

Without the owner's or resident's permission, no firearm may be discharged while taking wildlife within one-fourth mile of an occupied farmhouse, residence, cabin, lodge or building, under A.R.S. 17-309. A commission rule sets the same 440 yards for arrows.

Is this the official Arizona hunter education test?

No. The page is unofficial and has no affiliation with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Every question was written here from the statutes and rules; the department alone runs classes and issues cards.
