How this list was compiled: Written from chapter 183D of the Hawaii Revised Statutes as the Legislature publishes it at https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol03_Ch0121-0200D/HRS0183D/HRS_0183D-.htm (sections 183D-1, 183D-5, 183D-21 to 183D-28, 183D-32, 183D-33, 183D-51, 183D-52 and 183D-62), and from the Hawaii Administrative Rules, Title 13, chapters 121 (hunting on public lands), 122 (game birds) and 123 (game mammals), in the copies the Division of Forestry and Wildlife posts at https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dofaw/rules/ . All were read on 2026-10-13; each question names its section. The course and exam facts (12 hours, the written exam and its 75% minimum, ages 10 and 16, the topics) are the Department of Land and Natural Resources' own, read the same day on its Basic hunter education classes page at https://gohunthawaii.ehawaii.gov/public/basic-classes.html ; that page is the published outline this page follows. The department publishes no question count or time limit for the exam on that page, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, the Hawaii Administrative Rules and the facts on the department's public page; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.
How it works
An unofficial Hawaii hunter safety practice test: our own questions from chapter 183D of the Revised Statutes and the state hunting rules, each with its section. Firearm and bow handling, survival and first aid are taught in the class itself.

Rules that are Hawaii's own
Where firearms are allowed, hunters, guides and helpers wear a solid blaze-orange outer garment; camouflage orange does not count. A tag goes through the skin and around a back leg bone at once. Game mammals may be hunted on private land all year, with a license and the landowner's permission.
What the exam is
The Department of Land and Natural Resources ends its 12-hour basic class with a written exam. It publishes no question count or time limit, so none is claimed here.
A cartridge firearm is unloaded only when the chamber and any attached magazine are empty.
Where a check station stands, check in before hunting and check out after.
Questions and answers
Who needs hunter education in Hawaii?
Anyone born after December 31, 1971, and anyone older who has never held a Hawaii hunting license, under section 183D-28. A hunter born before 1972 who can prove an earlier Hawaii license may get a written exemption.
What score passes the Hawaii hunter education exam?
The department says students who receive a minimum of 75% on the written exam get a hunting certification card and number. The certification does not expire.
How old do you have to be to take hunter education in Hawaii?
Sixteen to take the class alone. A child who is 10 on the day the class starts may take it with an adult chaperone, and the rules issue the certificate from age 10.
Does Hawaii accept a hunter education card from another state?
Yes. Section 183D-28 accepts a course approved by the International Hunter Education Association, on proof such as a certificate or wallet card issued by a state, province or country.
Is this the official Hawaii hunter education test?
No. It is unofficial and not affiliated with the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources. The questions are our own, written from the statutes and rules; none comes from the department's exam or its course material.
