Rules that are Oregon's own
Game mammal hours run from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Deer, elk and turkey tag holders report their hunting effort and harvest after the season.
What the course is
For students under 18 the rule requires a classroom part, in person or online, and a field day. The conventional in-person course is 14 to 16 hours of classroom instruction over several sessions.
Store-bought deer or elk urine attractants may not be possessed or used.

Who needs hunter safety in Oregon?
Every hunter younger than 18, under ORS 497.360, except on the youth's own land or a parent's or guardian's, or on a supervised mentored hunt. ODFW encourages adults to take the course, as other states may require it.
How old do you have to be to hunt in Oregon?
The mentored youth program takes hunters between nine and 16, beside a supervisory hunter of 21 or older, with one weapon between them. Game mammal tags may be bought from age 12 with a hunting license.
Is there a test at the Oregon hunter safety field day?
Yes. ODFW says a Field Day includes a multiple-choice written exam, live-fire exercises, ethical hunting practices and a hands-on evaluation of safe firearm handling. It publishes no question count or pass mark.
Do you have to wear orange to hunt in Oregon?
Only hunters younger than 18, when hunting game mammals or upland game birds other than turkey with a firearm. The rule asks for a fluorescent orange hat or exterior garment visible from all directions.
