How this list was compiled: Written from the New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated, Title XVIII (Fish and Game), as published by the New Hampshire General Court at https://gc.nh.gov/rsa/html/NHTOC/NHTOC-XVIII.htm: chapter 207 (sections 207:1, 207:2-a, 207:3-c, 207:3-d, 207:7, 207:8-a, 207:12-c, 207:36, 207:36-a, 207:37-a, 207:37-b, 207:38, 207:38-b, 207:39-c, 207:57 and 207:63), chapter 208 (sections 208:7, 208:8, 208:9, 208:15-d, 208:15-f and 208:16) and chapter 214 (sections 214:1, 214:2, 214:6-a, 214:20-b, 214:21, 214:23-a, 214:23-b and 214:23-d). The chapters were read on 2026-10-12 in the General Court's own files; each question names its section and links to it. The course facts in the topic "The course and its exam" (the multiple-choice written exam and its 80 percent, the field day, the age of 12, the subjects) are the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's own, read the same day on its Hunter Education page, https://www.wildlife.nh.gov/hunting-nh/hunter-education, which is the published outline this page follows. The department publishes no number of questions for the written exam, so none is given here. The department's administrative rules (Fis) and its hunting digest were not read and nothing is asked from them. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the statutes and the facts on the department's public page; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.

How it works

Unofficial practice for the New Hampshire hunter education written exam: our own questions from RSA Title XVIII, Fish and Game, and the department's published course facts, each with its section. Firearms handling, archery and map and compass work belong to the course.

New Hampshire rules the questions cover

Taking wild animals between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise is illegal night hunting. A deer is tagged when it is killed and registered at the first open station on the route, or online. Hunter orange is a recommendation in RSA 207:38-b, not a requirement.

What the written exam is

Fish and Game's in-person course ends in a multiple-choice written exam, then a field day assessment and practical exam. Exam mode here uses the department's pass mark for that exam; its 25 questions are our own length.

  • Under 16: hunt only with a properly licensed person 18 or older, within sight and hearing.
  • A deer left in the woods is reported to a conservation officer within 12 hours.

Questions and answers

What score do you need to pass the NH hunter safety test?

Fish and Game lists 80% or better on the multiple-choice written exam of its in-person course. It publishes no number of questions for that exam.

How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in NH?

Twelve. The in-person course asks that a student be 12 by its last day, and the online course with its in-person field day is open from 12.

Do you need hunter safety to hunt in NH?

RSA 214:23-a asks for a hunter education certificate, an equivalent course or proof of a previous hunting license before a hunting license is issued. An apprentice hunting license, bought once in a lifetime, allows accompanied hunting without one.

Is this the official NH hunter education exam?

No. This page is unofficial and not affiliated with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Classes, field days and certificates come only from the department.
