How this list was compiled: Written from the Hawaii Revised Statutes, chapters 286 and 291C, sections 286-102, 286-110, 286-2, 286-81, 291C-151, 291C-152, 291C-153, 291C-154, 291C-155, each read on the Hawaii State Legislature's site, https://data.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/, on 2026-09-24. Each question names its section and links to it. This bank states no test length and no pass mark, so no exam line is shown. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the Hawaii motorcycle manual, a county driver licensing office's materials, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.
How it works
This unofficial Hawaii state motorcycle permit test practice has 32 questions from the Hawaii Revised Statutes, with the section under each. It covers the law only, not riding technique, so study the state's motorcycle manual too. Sections read September 2026.

Category 2, the course and helmets in Hawaii law
Motorcycles and motor scooters are license category 2; autocycles sit in category 3 with cars (286-102). No motorcycle permit is issued until you finish an approved basic rider course (286-110). Riders and passengers under 18 wear a helmet fastened with a chin strap (286-81), and handlebars stay within 15 inches of the seat (291C-155).
Keeping the permit
Take the category 2 license exam at least once before the permit runs out, or you cannot renew it and must wait three months for another (286-110). This bank gives no question count or pass mark, so it has no exam mode: use the Start from menu and Missed.
Renting a moped or scooter without a motorcycle license? Section 286-81(b) requires a helmet, and the rental company provides it.
Questions and answers
Does Hawaii require a motorcycle helmet?
Only for riders and passengers under 18, under section 286-81(e), and it must be fastened with a chin strap. Anyone renting a moped or scooter without a motorcycle license must also wear one (286-81(b)).
Do I need a rider course before a Hawaii motorcycle permit?
Yes. Section 286-110(b) bars issuing a motorcycle instruction permit until you complete a basic motorcycle rider course approved by the state department of transportation.
Is this the official Hawaii motorcycle written test?
No. This is not a government website and is not affiliated with any county examiner of drivers or the state. It has never seen the real questions. Every answer here rests on a section of Hawaii law.
