How this list was compiled: Written from the Idaho Code, Title 49 (Motor Vehicles), as published by the Idaho Legislature at https://legislature.idaho.gov/statutesrules/idstat/, checked 2026-09-19. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts on the page come from the Idaho Transportation Department, https://itd.idaho.gov/dmv/drivers-licenses-id-cards/motorcycle-endorsement/, checked 2026-09-19: a motorcycle knowledge test is needed to buy the instruction permit and to add the endorsement, and a rider course is required under 21. That page and https://itd.idaho.gov/guide/taking-the-drivers-test/ give no question count, pass mark or time limit for the motorcycle knowledge test, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the Idaho Motorcycle Handbook, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, Idaho STAR or another practice test.

How it works

Idaho writes its motorcycle rules into Title 49 of the Idaho Code, and the 85 questions in this unofficial Idaho motorcycle permit practice test come from nowhere else. Each shows its section: a one-year permit, daylight riding only, no passengers, no interstate, a helmet under 18. Riding technique is not asked. Sections read September 2026.

Idaho's one-year, daylight-only instruction permit

Idaho Code § 49-305(4) gives a licensed driver a one-year instruction permit, then bars passengers, riding outside daylight and the interstate system. A breach cancels the permit even without a conviction. § 49-666 asks for a helmet only under 18, and § 49-304(3) sends applicants under 21 to a rider course. Chapter 6 has no lane-sharing section, so this Idaho motorcycle practice test asks nothing about it.

What ITD publishes about the test

The Idaho Transportation Department's motorcycle endorsement page, checked September 2026, requires the knowledge test to buy the permit, add the endorsement or transfer one from another state. It lists $5 for the written test, $15 for the permit and $25 for the skills test. ITD tells permit holders to stay off any highway or freeway. The statute says interstate. ITD's page gives no question count, pass mark or time limit. So Exam mode's 25 questions are a number this site chose, scored with no pass or fail. Every miss waits under Missed, and Clear my progress wipes it.

  • Set Start from to Permits, the "M" endorsement and the safety program first: the retest wait and skills test waivers sit in § 49-313.
  • A moped stops at 30 mph and 50 cc and needs no endorsement, while a motor-driven cycle makes 5 brake horsepower or less and needs one.
  • Learn chapter 9's motorcycle exceptions: one or two head lamps, one reflector, one brake, and no turn signals required.

Questions and answers

Can I retake the Idaho motorcycle permit test if I fail?

Yes, after three calendar days. Idaho Code § 49-313(5) sets that wait after a failed knowledge test. Subsection (7) waives the skills test, not the written one, for a rider who completed a recognized, approved rider training course.

What can I not do on an Idaho motorcycle instruction permit?

Under Idaho Code § 49-305(4) you may not carry any passenger, ride outside daylight hours or ride on any interstate highway system. Pass the skills test while the permit is valid and the $15 endorsement fee is not charged.

Does Idaho's DMV test ask more than the Code?

Yes. Under § 49-304 the knowledge test covers safe operating practices as well as traffic law. This bank holds only the law: every answer is a section of the Idaho Code. The page is unofficial and unaffiliated with the Idaho Transportation Department, so read ITD's motorcycle handbook for the rest.
