How this list was compiled: Written from the Montana Code Annotated 2025, Title 61 (Motor Vehicles), sections 61-5-102, 61-5-110, 61-5-106, 61-1-101, 61-9-417, 61-9-203, 61-9-204, 61-9-206, 61-9-304, 61-9-418, 61-9-223, 61-9-405, 61-8-359, 61-8-392, 61-8-102, each read on the Legislature's site, https://mca.legmt.gov/bills/mca/title_0610/chapters_index.html, on 2026-09-30. Each question names its section and links to it. That a knowledge test is part of the examination is MCA 61-5-110(2)(a): the department examines each applicant for a driver's license or motorcycle endorsement with an eyesight test, a knowledge test and a road or skills test, and 61-5-110(2)(b) lets a certified cooperative driver testing program stand in for the knowledge and skills tests. The Motor Vehicle Division's page https://mvdmt.gov/motorcycle/, read with a browser on 2026-09-30, says written and driving tests are required and names the Montana Motorcycle Supplement; it gives no number of questions and no pass mark, so neither is used. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the Montana Motorcycle Supplement, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial Montana motorcycle endorsement practice test has 63 questions from the Montana Code Annotated, with the section under each. It covers the law only; riding technique is in the Montana Motorcycle Supplement, so study that too.

The endorsement and the learner license

A Montana license is valid for a motorcycle only when it is marked "motorcycle endorsement"; an autocycle or a three-wheeled motorcycle needs none (MCA 61-5-102). A motorcycle learner rides without a passenger, under the immediate and proximate visual supervision of an endorsed driver on a separate vehicle (61-5-106).

What Montana law says about the test

Section 61-5-110 has the department examine each applicant for a motorcycle endorsement: an eyesight test, a knowledge test on highway signs and traffic laws, and a road or skills test. A certified motorcycle safety training course can stand in for the knowledge and skills tests. The Motor Vehicle Division's page, read September 2026, gives no question count or pass mark, so no pass line is shown.

  • Lane filtering is lawful only on a two-wheeled motorcycle, past a vehicle that is stopped or moving at 10 miles an hour or less (61-8-392).

Questions and answers

Is there a helmet law in Montana?

Only for riders under 18. An operator or passenger under 18 on a motorcycle, moped, motorized scooter or quadricycle wears protective headgear that meets the department of justice's standards, and nobody may carry an under-18 passenger without it (MCA 61-9-417).

Do you need a motorcycle endorsement for a three-wheeler in Montana?

No. Section 61-5-102 says a motorcycle endorsement is not required for an autocycle or a three-wheeled motorcycle. A two-wheeled motorcycle needs a license marked with the words "motorcycle endorsement".

Is this the Montana Motor Vehicle Division's own test?

No. This site is not a government website, has no tie to the Motor Vehicle Division or the Department of Justice, and has not seen the state's questions. Each answer here rests on a section of Title 61 of the Montana Code Annotated.
