How this list was compiled: Written from the New Jersey Statutes, Title 39 (Motor Vehicles and Traffic Regulation) and N.J.S.A. 27:5F-36 to 27:5F-40 (motorcycle safety education), as published by the New Jersey Legislature and updated through P.L.2026, c.30, checked 2026-09-19. Each question names its section. The Legislature's site has no address for a single section, so every link opens its statutes database, https://lis.njleg.state.nj.us/nxt/gateway.dll?f=templates&fn=default.htm&vid=Publish:10.1048/Enu, where you search for the section number shown under the question. The motorized bicycle questions follow P.L.2025, c.285, https://pub.njleg.gov/Bills/2024/PL25/285_.HTM. Exam facts: the Motor Vehicle Commission's motorcycle page, https://www.nj.gov/mvc/vehicletopics/motorcycle.htm, checked 2026-09-19, gives the minimum age of 17, the knowledge and vision tests and the practice riding periods. The 2026 New Jersey Driver Manual, https://www.nj.gov/mvc/pdf/license/drivermanual.pdf, gives 50 questions and 80 percent for the car knowledge test and prints no figures for the motorcycle test, so this page uses no question count or pass mark. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the New Jersey Driver Manual, its motorcycle chapter, a rider course or another practice test.
How it works
Title 39 of the New Jersey statutes is the only source for this unofficial New Jersey motorcycle permit practice test: 124 questions, each naming its section. It covers the examination permit, the 231 cc road test rule, helmets, passengers, equipment, mopeds and autocycles. Sources checked September 2026.

NJ motorcycle permit restrictions, from N.J.S.A. 39:3-13
The NJ motorcycle permit restrictions are in subsection (d): no riding from a half-hour after sunset to a half-hour before sunrise, nobody aboard but the operator, no Turnpike Authority or South Jersey Transportation Authority toll road, and no limited-access interstate highway. Under 18, subsection (f) adds the motorcycle safety education course.
From an NJ motorcycle permit to the road test
The commission's page lists the steps: be at least 17, bring six points of ID, and pass the knowledge and vision tests. An NJ motorcycle permit for an endorsement means 20 days of practice. A first license takes six months under 21 and three months from 21 (39:3-13(o)). Riding technique is in the commission's Motorcycle Manual, so read both.
Learn the 231 cc line in 39:3-10(e): test on a smaller engine and the license stops at 500 cc, unless you completed the safety education course.
A wind screen lifts the goggles rule under 39:3-76.9. It does nothing to the helmet rule in 39:3-76.7, which also covers the passenger.

Questions and answers
How many questions are on the NJ motorcycle permit test?
The commission publishes no figure. The 2026 New Jersey Driver Manual gives 50 questions and 80 percent for the car knowledge test, and neither it nor the commission's motorcycle page prints a count or pass mark for the motorcycle test. Exam mode here asks 25, this site's length, with no pass line.
Can I ride a small motorcycle in New Jersey on a car license?
Only the smallest class. Under N.J.S.A. 39:3-10(j), a basic driver's license covers a motorcycle with a motor under 50 cubic centimeters, or one rated at no more than 1.5 brake horsepower with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. Anything larger needs the endorsement or a separate motorcycle license.
Is this NJ motorcycle practice test from the Motor Vehicle Commission?
It is not. The page is not a government website, is not affiliated with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and has never seen its questions. Every question names its section of Title 39, so each answer can be checked against the law. The real test is booked through the commission.
