How this list was compiled: Written from the Code of Virginia, Title 46.2 (Motor Vehicles), sections 46.2-100, 46.2-1012, 46.2-1030, 46.2-328, 46.2-335, 46.2-337, 46.2-906, 46.2-907, 46.2-909, 46.2-910, 46.2-911.1, 46.2-914, each read at https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/ on 2026-09-24. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts on the page come from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles page https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/motorcycle/knowledge-exam, checked 2026-09-24: a knowledge exam of 25 questions based on the Motorcycle Operator Manual, taken on a computer, passed before the skills test. That page gives no pass mark, so none is used. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the Virginia Motorcycle Operator Manual, the DMV's sample exam, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.
How it works
This unofficial Virginia motorcycle permit practice test has 39 questions from Title 46.2 of the Code of Virginia, with the section under each. It covers the law only; the DMV's exam is based on its Motorcycle Operator Manual, so study that too.

The permit, the course and the classification
On a motorcycle learner's permit you ride alone, supervised from a separate vehicle by a licensed rider aged 21 or older (46.2-335). Fail the road test twice and a licensed rider training course comes first (46.2-337). Finish that course at 19 or older and your license carries a temporary motorcycle classification for 30 days (46.2-328).
The knowledge exam as the DMV describes it
The DMV's motorcycle knowledge exam page, checked September 2026, describes 25 questions taken on a computer, passed before the skills test. It gives no pass mark, so exam mode here draws 25 questions and shows your score with no pass line.
Mopeds have their own limits in 46.2-914: 16 or older, never on an interstate, and over 35 mph the rider counts as a motorcyclist.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Virginia motorcycle knowledge exam?
Twenty-five, says the DMV's motorcycle knowledge exam page, checked September 2026. That page gives no pass mark. Exam mode here copies the 25 questions only and does not invent a pass line.
Can I carry a passenger on a Virginia motorcycle learner's permit?
No. Section 46.2-335(J) says no person other than the operator may occupy the motorcycle. Your supervisor, a licensed rider aged 21 or older, follows in a separate vehicle.
Is this the VA DMV's sample motorcycle license exam?
No. This is not a government website, is not affiliated with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and has never seen its questions. Every answer here rests on a section of the Code of Virginia.
