How this list was compiled: Written from the Revised Code of Washington, Title 46, and the Washington Administrative Code, chapters 308-104 and 308-109, as published by the Washington State Legislature at https://app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?Cite=46 and https://app.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=308-109, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts on the page come from the Washington State Department of Licensing, https://dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/motorcycle/motorcycle-endorsement-training-and-testing/2-wheel-2w-motorcycle-testing and https://dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/motorcycle/get-2-wheel-motorcycle-permit-or-endorsement, checked 2026-09-18: the permit knowledge test has 50 questions and the endorsement knowledge test has 25, tests are taken at approved motorcycle training schools, and the permit is valid 180 days. Neither page publishes a pass mark for either knowledge test, so none is used here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and administrative code text; nothing is copied from the Washington Motorcycle Operator Manual, the Department of Licensing's sample questions, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

The Revised Code of Washington and the licensing rules in WAC 308-104 and 308-109 supply all 118 questions in this unofficial Washington motorcycle permit practice test, with the section under every answer: a 180-day permit with no passengers and no night riding, a helmet for rider and passenger, two abreast at most. Sections read September 2026.

Rules a Washington rider meets first

RCW 46.37.530 requires a helmet for the operator and every passenger, with narrow exceptions. The same section asks for a mirror on each side and bars carrying a child under five. RCW 46.61.608 forbids passing inside an occupied lane and riding between rows of vehicles. When a signal's detector cannot sense the motorcycle, RCW 46.61.184 allows a careful start after a full stop and one complete cycle.

What the Department of Licensing publishes

The DOL's 2-wheel testing page lists four tests for the endorsement: two knowledge tests and two riding skills tests, taken at approved motorcycle training schools. The permit knowledge test has 50 questions and the endorsement one has 25. This bank is statute-only, so braking and cornering stay with the Motorcycle Operator Manual and the DOL's sample questions.

  • In the Start from menu, begin with Endorsement, permit, tests and training: 180 days, one renewal, two permits in five years, and your driver's license carried with the permit.
  • A moped takes any license at 16, a motor-driven cycle takes the endorsement, and an enclosed, belted machine with a steering wheel needs only a driver's license.
  • Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Marks come at the end. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Washington motorcycle permit test?

Fifty, says the Department of Licensing's 2-wheel testing page, opened September 2026. The later endorsement knowledge test has 25. Neither that page nor the manual gives a pass mark, so exam mode here draws 50 questions to match and shows a score without a pass line.

What can I not do on a Washington motorcycle permit?

RCW 46.20.510 bars two things: carrying passengers, and riding during the hours of darkness. RCW 46.04.200 runs those hours from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, plus any time objects are unclear at 500 feet.

Is this the Department of Licensing's own test?

No. This is not a government website, it has no tie to the Washington State Department of Licensing, and nobody here has seen the department's questions. Each question was written from RCW or WAC text, not taken from the manual or the DOL's samples.
