How this list was compiled: Written from the Alaska Statutes (AS 28.15.011, 28.15.051, 28.35.245 and 28.90.990) and the Alaska Administrative Code (2 AAC 90.210 and 90.420; 13 AAC 02.425 and 02.427; 13 AAC 04.210 and 04.320 to 04.355), each read on the Alaska State Legislature's site, https://www.akleg.gov/basis/statutes.asp and https://www.akleg.gov/basis/aac.asp, on 2026-09-30. Each question names its section and links to it. That a knowledge examination comes before a motorcycle license or permit is 2 AAC 90.210(a) (an applicant for a classified license must pass an examination appropriate to the class), 2 AAC 90.420(h) (an applicant for an original license must take the vision and knowledge tests) and AS 28.15.051(a) (the instruction permit follows all parts of the examination other than the driving test). The Division of Motor Vehicles site, dmv.alaska.gov, refused every request on 2026-09-30, so no number of questions or pass mark is used. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and regulation text; nothing is copied from the Alaska motorcycle manual, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.
How it works
This unofficial Alaska motorcycle practice test has 47 questions from the Alaska Statutes and the Alaska Administrative Code, with the section under each. It covers the law only; riding technique is in the state's motorcycle manual, so study that too.

Classes M1, M2 and M3 and the permit
Alaska sorts motorcycles by engine and wheels: Class M1 for 50 cc or more, M3 for three-wheelers of 50 cc or more and M2 for under 50 cc (2 AAC 90.210). An instruction permit is open from age 14 and lasts up to two years. On a motorcycle the holder is accompanied and immediately supervised by someone of 21 or older (AS 28.15.051).
What Alaska law says about the test
An applicant passes an examination for the class applied for (2 AAC 90.210), and an original license needs the vision and knowledge tests (2 AAC 90.420). A failed knowledge test may be retaken the following day. The Division of Motor Vehicles site could not be opened in September 2026, so no pass line is shown.
The department may waive the motorcycle skills test after a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course; that subsection, 2 AAC 90.420(k), names the skills test only.
Questions and answers
Do you have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle in Alaska?
AS 28.35.245 says a person 18 or older who holds a motorcycle license or endorsement may not be required to wear one while operating. Otherwise 13 AAC 04.350 requires protective headgear on a public roadway, except as a statute provides.
What age can you get a motorcycle permit in Alaska?
Fourteen. AS 28.15.051 lets a person of at least 14 apply for a noncommercial instruction permit after passing every part of the examination except the driving test. The permit lasts up to two years and may be renewed once.
Is this the Alaska DMV motorcycle practice test?
No. This is not a government website and is not affiliated with the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles; it has never seen the division's questions. Each answer rests on a section of the Alaska Statutes or the Alaska Administrative Code.
