How this list was compiled: Examination: 12 AAC 09.056 says the examination for a barber license consists of the written examination entitled the National Barber-Stylist Test, and for a non-chemical barber license the Barber-No Chemical Test, both sponsored by the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology, with a passing grade of 75 percent or above (https://www.akleg.gov/basis/aac.asp#12.09.056). The examination service's candidate bulletin for the Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers (https://provexam.com/test-information/alaska-board-of-barbers-and-hairdressers/bulletin.pdf) lists Barber Styling 2023 at 110 questions and Barber 1 (No Chemical) 2023 at 60 questions, each in 90 minutes with 10 unscored pilot questions and a passing score of 75, and no practical examination. Questions: AS 08.13, Barbers and Hairdressers; 12 AAC 09, the Board's regulations; and 18 AAC 23, the sanitation requirements for schools and shops, as published by the Alaska Legislature on akleg.gov; and the bulletin. Each question names its section and links to it. Read 2026-10-16. Licence: Own work. Every question, wrong choice and explanation was written for this site from the statute, the regulations and the bulletin named. Nothing comes from the examination, a textbook, a prep course or a question pool.
How it works
This unofficial Alaska barber practice test asks our own questions on AS 08.13, the Board's regulations and the state's sanitation rules for shops. It is not affiliated with the Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers or NIC.

What the Alaska barber exam is
Alaska's licensing examination is written only. 12 AAC 09.056 names the National Barber-Stylist Test for a barber license and the Barber-No Chemical Test for a non-chemical barber license; the candidate bulletin (opened October 16, 2026) calls them Barber Styling and Barber 1 (No Chemical). Both have four content areas: scientific concepts, implements and equipment, hair care services, and facial hair and skin care.
What this page practices
Alaska's own text: the sanitation rules a shop certifies it meets, shop owner duties, the two barber licenses, permits and apprenticeship, and how the examination is run. Hair, skin and shaving theory, which both national tests ask, is not on this page.
Shaving brushes, shaving mugs, alum and powder puffs are allowed only as single-use articles, and a neck strip is single-use (18 AAC 23.220).
A temporary license lasts 120 days, cannot be renewed, and means working in the physical presence of a licensee (AS 08.13.175).
Non-chemical barbering leaves out permanent waving, bleaching, coloring and chemical straightening, and its examination may not test them (AS 08.13.040).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Alaska barber written exam?
The bulletin lists Barber Styling at 110 questions and Barber 1 (No Chemical) at 60, each in 90 minutes, with 10 unscored pilot questions in each.
What score do you need to pass the Alaska barber exam?
12 AAC 09.056 sets a passing grade of 75 percent or above, and the candidate bulletin prints a passing score of 75 for both barber tests.
Is Alaska state law on the barber exam?
No: neither national test has a state law part. Alaska still puts five hours of state law in every barber course (12 AAC 09.160), and a sanitation violation is grounds for discipline. The Washington barber test follows the theory outline.
Are these the real Alaska barber exam questions?
No. Each was written for this page from AS 08.13, 12 AAC 09, 18 AAC 23 and the candidate bulletin, with the section under each answer. None comes from either national test or a textbook.
How many hours do you need for a barber license in Alaska?
1,650 hours in an approved school or a 2,000-hour apprenticeship for a barber license; 1,350 school hours or 1,600 apprenticeship hours for a non-chemical barber license (12 AAC 09.090).
