What the North Dakota barber exam is
The Board of Barber Examiners gives its own examination at least four times a year (N.D.C.C. 43-04-33). Its instruction sheet and study guide (opened October 16, 2026) describe a written part of multiple choice, true/false and written questions, and a practical on a model the applicant brings.
What this page practices
The Board's study guide says the multiple choice questions come from a barbering textbook, which this page does not use. It asks what North Dakota itself publishes: the sanitation rules, shop and license law, and the rules of exam day. A restricted barber license is examined on laws and rules alone (N.D.C.C. 43-04-31.2).
Lather brushes: water of at least 170 degrees for two minutes after each customer. Combs: twenty minutes in the dip sterilizer (N.D.A.C. 14-02-04).
Bring adjustable lever clippers with no guards, and a model with three inches of hair on top and one inch on the sides.
By N.D.C.C. 43-04-39 a certificate not renewed during July expires August 1; the Board's renewal page says all licenses expire June 30.

What score do you need to pass the North Dakota barber exam?
75 percent or more on both the written and the practical portions, by the Board's instruction sheet; N.D.A.C. 14-03-01-01 sets seventy-five percent for a master license.
What is on the North Dakota barber practical exam?
A conventional graduated taper haircut, a full straight razor shave, a facial and scalp massage, a reclined shampoo and clean up. Each step is timed and checked by an examiner before the next begins.

No. Each was written for this page from N.D.C.C. chapter 43-04, N.D.A.C. title 14 and the Board's exam instructions, with the section under each answer. The Board's own written questions are not reproduced, and no textbook was used.
How many hours do you need for a barber license in North Dakota?
N.D.C.C. 43-04-32 makes an applicant eligible for the examination after at least 1,100 hours of training. Approved schools teach at least 1,500 hours (43-04-24), and the Board's exam sheet asks for 1,500 hours and graduation, so confirm with the Board.
